OMG!! At first i thought you were kidding!! Unbelievable!! Actually got the red bulb idea from the U of Minnesota which did a lot of behavioral work on chickens and chicken raising info. I think the old time solution was to use pine tar. Usually the best looking chic of the bunch is the one that is not laying.

I was almost hoping that some of mine would get pecked on. They're about 12 or 13 weeks now and I'm ready to start eating the roosters. I'm not sure how I'm going to pick out which ones to eat though. I was hoping to just choose the ones that were getting picked on. Maybe I'll get out the scales and eat the fattest ones first.

In other news, my white pekin duck has started hanging out with the chickens. I hear the duck down on the pond quacking away when I get home from work. I let the chickens out of their pen and the duck runs right up to hang out with the chickens. They don't seem to like the duck so much, but she really likes them. I guess she's lonely since something besides me ate all her friends.

dooleysym

Are those layers straight run or 'meats'?

Roosters are usually the bigger ones, and ones most likely to start crowing. Quality of the crow is usually the rating for the quality of the pot. The worse the crow the more likely to be in the pot.

Well, we got home last night and after checking on the chickens they all made it. And... there was an egg in the coop. It is a little one, and a bit cracked, and not in the nest box, but it is an egg. Hey, maybe I should go out and check for eggs now, be back later.

... at this age all they want to do is help so if I have tasks that he can handle he gets them and loves them.

Mine is the same way. I find things for him to do, give him some tools and let him at it. His favorite is to take things apart. It really doesn't matter what, he just loves to figure it out. We had a VHS player die on us with a video in it. I put it in the shop and told him to take it apart to get out the tape, the VHS player was junk and to be put in the garbage when he was done. He spent hours and hours working on it. Even after he got the tape out, he kept at it until he took apart every single piece!!!

He has his own workbench, toolbox and "real" tools. I give him all my wood scraps and sometimes while we're watching TV, he'll be out there in the shop putting pieces of wood together.

It looks like your little helper is having the time of his life. All the toys are nothing comared to the time spent helping dad and being part of buildings something. I agree with the others, he'll keep these memories for life and you're starting him on a life of probelm solving and finishing what he starts.

Good job,
Eddie

Thanks. It is a lot of fun, in a few years he will be able to do "vcr" type stuff, he will be 4 at the end of this month so he has a little bit until then. It has been fun, hoping to start getting eggs consistently and in the "right" place. We will see.

Ok, no eggs yesterday but here is the picture of the first one. It is only about the size of a golf ball.

Hehe,
That would be a minor miracle with me only having three hens. But you never know after watching Jurassic Park. Hrmm...
