Child on Motorcycle or Tractor which is more dangerous

/ Child on Motorcycle or Tractor which is more dangerous #81
I just found out a friend of mine has died. He owned a dirt bike track and has owned and operated it for over 20 yrs. and was a very experienced rider. This past Saturday he was not so lucky....he was severley injured riding the motorcycle and ended up being without oxygen for 40 too long before help arrived....they life flighted him and he was found to be brain dead...now what if he had a child on there with him. Motorcyles are much more dangerous on or off the road than a tractor In my humble opinion.

The title of this thread - Which is more dangerous?
I looked up some numbers.
73 motorcycle deaths per 100,000 registrations vs 14 auto deaths per 100,000 registrations.
So the motorcycle death risk is 5x the auto death risk. Big surprise.

4810 motorcycle fatalities in 2006. 10% were passengers. That's about 480 motorcycle passengers killed. That 4810 was 11% of the 44,000 overall highway deaths.

Tractor related deaths total about 200 per year. If someone dies on a tractor it's news. When someone dies on the highway it's not.

Oh yeah, the ATV fatality rate is 550/year, 20-25 of them farm related.

We all know MC's can be dangerous, this is the allure for young men not unlike guns. But this thread was "supposed" to be about a specific question.
These stats don't tell us anything regarding the subject of what is more dangerous for a child, as they are not broken down that way.
I want to know how many of those MC passenger deaths were children under 16 and how many of those tractor deaths were children under 16.
The atv death stat is alarming as I'm sure many of those were under 16 :(

In my own personal experience, I have never know a child who was injured on a motorcycle on the highway as a passenger. One of my friend's kids fell off his tractor and under his bush hog and got a leg cut off.

Although I would not ride my grandson on a motorcycle on the highway, I believe that riding a child on a motorcycle makes YOU at LESS risk of getting killed. I say this because I know that most folks driving their child around drive much safer and more defensively than when they are driving by themselves. It seems that most people care more about the safety of their young'uns then they do themselves.

Exactly, this hits it on the head,
That's what I've been saying, never heard of a child passenger dying or seriously injured as a result of a street bike accident. Probably due to his second point here about how most people would naturally exhibit extra caution when carrying young passengers.

Sad, but not relevant to the OP topic, as one does not carry passengers on a motocross bike, probably trying to clear a triple.

This thread has become an anti/pro motorcycle rant IMO and never really looked objectively at the OP's question.

I think it's quite inapropriate to bring firearms into this discussion and malign them with the connotation that they are attractive to young males do to the fact that they could be dangerous... :(

they are a tool... everything else rests with the user of the tool.

Slightly off-topic but I was just riding through NW Arkansas and saw this motorcycle tree and wondered what made them end up like this.

Don't want to turn this into a different hot button issue, so maybe I shouldn't of brought up the G-word, but I stand by what I said, wasn't trying to disparage guns.

It's just that young males are naturally attracted to dangerous activities like fast motor-sports, bungee jumping, mountain climbing etc... of course there are exceptions, but mostly males.

I'm a pro gunner but I think modern gun ownership is little deeper than "just another tool" unless your a rancher using a rifle for pest control.

When you first became interested in firearms (if you were just a teenager like I was) did you think of them as tools? I didn't, it's more primeval than that. Go back further to when you were a boy playing war with a stick for a gun, did you think of that as just a tool? That's not how young men think, that's a mature persons way of thinking.

Anyway I'm gonna post some more gun topic in the thread you started about the .380's

My neighbour works in the hospital, he repairs the electric adjustable beds.

He says the first spring weekend, they work overtime. Its the motorcyclists that havent ridden their bikes during the winter, get spring itch and go loose in the early spring sun. The papers report several motor deaths as soon as the temperature gets to 15ーC
