Chimney Installation Questions

You gave me a bunch of good info for not knowing what I meant.
Mind reader maybe LOL
Earlier in this thread some one mentioned that my chimney might be to tall for a outside chimney and cause the chimney to cool off and not draft well.
I don't think yours is going to be too tall, you might have a bit of difficulty getting it to draw initially but once you get it the slightest bit warm I can't see you having a problem.
I was thinking that a chimney of wood around a 6" Selkirk type chimney might keep it warmer and help it draft better.
Waste of time, material and money IMHO....Mike

dieselscout80,

Check these posts on my install of a wood/coal burning furnace maybe they will give you some ideas about the chimney situation. In my case for nearly the same money it was better to have a masonry layed up than using the triple wall stainless "Simpson Dura-Vent" brand and then building some sort of chase around it to make it look nice.

Anyways take a look at these...might give you a few ideas. I tried to paste the links here in order of occurance.

A few questions I asked later about some "issues":

I installed an inside chimney in our first home in the '70s. At the time "triple wall" meant an air thermo siphoning system. Flowing air was used to keep the pipe cool for clearance purposes. I hope that same system is not in use today. IMHO that would be a disaster. A chimney has to be hot to draw and keep the liner relatively clean. Those triple wall units would condense creosote very quickly. I opted for a double wall insulated stainless. And make sure the inner diameter is sufficiently large to draw well when the stove door is open for loading.

Run it inside if at any way possible because you will loose a ton of heat and could indeed have draft problems. I will be installing on in my basement & it will have to go through the main floor then the roof...about 36'....it ain't gonna be cheap.

This site has a estimator that figures out all fittings in one price based on the dimentions you enter(roof pitch, length or run etc.)

Also, make sure run the top of the flue at least 3' higher than the peak of your roof or your draft will be weak. Wind flow over a peak(or over any obstruction close to a flue) will cause voids, updrafts and other strange air currents. All of this can cause a hose of draft issues.
