does anyone know a good height to locate a thimble in a new chimney for a 6" stove pipe

High enough that any stove would fit under it with room for the elbow, not just the one you have now.

Low enough that you don't catch the ceiling on fire.

You will get some heat off the flue pipe if you leave some exposed above the stove before it turns into the thimble.

Put it at any height that is useful for you. Remember to leave at least 3x the diameter of the stovepipe as clearance to any combustible surface. (6" stovepipe needs 18" clearance to ceiling, for instance)

put it at a height so your stovepipe connections can all be made without having to customize the pieces.

depends on where its at in a barn high as possible to reclaim lost heat , in a house would depend on type of stove

Grate Advice, Thanks much for the replies. more pipe in the living space means more heat correct. And staying a minimum of 18" for standard safety.
