Wait, so how do you write numerically the following then? ;

31 Thousandths of an inch

One thousandth of an inch is .001"

31 thousandths of an inch is .031"

In thousandths, 0.0031 is 3.1 thousandths.

In thousandths, 0.0031 is 3.1 thousandths.

Or 31 ten-thousandths, or 310 hundred-thousandths, or .31 hundredths, or .031 tenths, or .0031 inches.

I knew my Math degree would be useful one day. :laughing:

Just say 31 tenths and everyone will assume you work in the machine shop.:)

For what its worth, a service rep at the US distributor for Valby/Farmi told me that a one degree difference in the prescribed angle of a chipper knife will have a significant effect on chipper performance.

Goodness! HA! We used to stop at Bolton Orchards coming home from
grandmas...Do they still give out free cider? Gawd the things you remember, I also remember there is a downhill on that road and if you hit
it fast you really get a heck of a feeling of weightlessness...heading east.

0.0031"

To the left of the decimal point is a whole number, in this case ZERO

One space to the right of the decimal point is TENS
Two spaces to the right of the decimal point is HUNDREDTHS
Three spaces to the right of the decimal point is THOUSANDS
Four spaces to the right of the decimal point is TEN-THOUSANDS

Right? So am I wrong? Is that not called out verbally;
Thirty-One-Thousandths of an Inch ?

Thirty one thousandths is 0.031"...
What you wrote (.0031") is three thousandths, one ten thousandth or thirty one ten-thousandths (we QA and Machinist guys normally refer to it as "three and a tenth")

Luckily, in the tractoring business, we usually only need to worry about numbers on the left side of the decimal.
