I already have a chipper (jinma 6") which has an auto feed system. Now, I need a smaller one and don't want to pay some more money for it. I am about to make a smaller and a simpler home-built one. I hate machines with many moving parts, so, I will cancel/omit auto feed mechanism. So, those of you who have chipper with manual feed have experiences, are you having any problem with manual feed? Also, I will use this smaller chipper (still pto powered) also as shredder to shread the sugar beet. I am thinking about an easily replacable flywheel. Maybe, some of you who already has such a chipper/shredder may shorten my thinking time.

The non-auto feed TroyBilts and MacKissics have about 4 rectangular hammers mounted on 4 or so shafts. The rectangular hammers have little rectangular cutouts in the corners of the rectangles. These act as little "grabbers" that tend to pull the brush into the hopper. When they're new and not rounded off, they work fine to pull the brush in. Takes a long time to round them off, as they're quite hard metal.

The chippers rotate with a knife blade that kinda perpendicular to the rotation. The rotation then tends to pull the limb being chipped a little bit, not as strong a pull as from the hammers.

Why don't you buy my MacKissic that goes on my Gravely and been used about 3 times? Just adapt it rather than build your own. It doesn't have a chipper, only the hammers which are virtually like new.

The PTO version of the Mackissic has 24 of these hammers and there is no notch on them. They are about the size of a plying card and perhaps 3/16" thick.

The blade is parallel to the plane of rotation of the flywheel with the cutting angle facing in toward the flywheel. There is an opening behind the cutter providing for the chips to go through the fly wheel and pass into the shredder section. Since the input shoot is at a downward angle, gravity and the downward chop combine to make pushing a branch through little effort.

I think this is a good idea. I wouldn't try to build one, I'd get a good sized used one, perhaps in rough shape, and rebuild it with your purpose in mind and remove the worn out engine, replacing that with a PTO drive. I think it would make your life a lot easier.

Hi Ralph,

How much for the Gravely-pto-drive chipper? Will it work on an old Gravely L two-wheel tractor pto?

I was thinking about $200. That's what I paid for an old rotary plow that wasn't in anywhere near as good a shape.

It'll fit on older Gravelys. In fact, they might not have to have the cast iron adaptor that I have to use on my 5665 that has its own PTO clutches. This MacKissic has its own clutches and requires the cast iron adaptor and dog to space it out to fit on my 5665.

By the way, I've also an old square chute snow blower for the older Gravelys. It's probably been used 2 or 3 times, too. I've only used it once. Worked like a champ. About $200 for it, too.
