I understand the OP and don't completely disagree, but if TBN turns into something like a Joe Friday interview, I really have no interest in posting.

i know.

how many face to face conversations in the real world do you have that start, continue, and and talking about 1 sole topic.. and if the other party or parties try to interject a side topic, someone in a white coat walks up and air horns them so the comment is not heard. ??

topical forums are fine.. and good.

throwing hands up and declaring a thread useless when a side comment or 2 pops in like has been mentioned seems a bit drastic and myopic. communication migration is normal.. unless you are a digital computer..

I have looked up and read the post of some of the chit/chat posters, and that is what most of their post is, just chit chat, and they just babble on and on, thinking that is normal. I wonder if their friends have told they have a problem. Even smiley faces don't help their situation.

Someone should have the authority to just trash those kinds of post.

I would hope the administrators would jump in and clean up some of the garbage and guide them to the correct path, maybe over to Facebook and Twitter.

Perhaps charge a fee for every post not on track with the forum.

wow.. seems kinda harsh. maybee we should stop people and ask them for their 'papers' too? that always has worked out real well in history

Sounds to me like there is a real need for an " Old Codgers " Forum where only serious farm and tractor conversations are allowed, no jokes, no fun, no sense of humor or quips...Just the facts and no smiley faces...Yeah, that's the ticket.

i've been on technical boards like that.

what you get is a group of people that are clsoe minded with blinders on. no new ideas ( can't.. that would be off topic ).. and no one thinks outside the box.

I just quit an engineering forum for that same reason. a group of real smart people so used to flagelating themselves and walking the line that they couldn't figure out a new way to do something.... it was fun fo rthe 2 days i was there. er.. no wait. after about 10m I knew i was in trouble.

working on a problem with a few possible soloutions. I was quickly told none but 1 would be possible or work.

here.. a couple weeks later.. I'm 100% operational on one of the 'impossibe' options that the other smart people said couldn't be.

Members that don't stick to the subject matter are bad members.. bad I tell you.. no humor should be involved when someone breaks a high compression lug nut on his tractor.. it should be righty tightly,, lefty loosely conversation only.. darn you chitter chatters.. bad members,, bad.. but funny,, thanks for the laughs,, .. Good Lord, I just found and read this 'Chit Chat' thread! (Why yes, I have been out of town for a few weeks. Lovely trip to the mainland to visit friends... but I digress... :laughing

I wouldn't want to be part of a site like that. Sometimes wandering a bit off topic sparks an idea or an explanation from someone. Just like certain acronyms or terms that I'm either not familiar with OR that I am familiar with it but by a different term/word/acronym is helpful. For example: North American = "J-Cloth" / Aussie = "Chux".

Chit chat is helpful as it lets members relate similar stories of their experiences, cut it off and TBN loses much of what makes TBN, TBN.

OK, I'll bite.

What about a rating box embedded in each post like some of the online newspapers? It won't prevent an inappropriate post, but over time, a poster that tends to post cute comments with no value would get the idea that he is the only one who thinks they're cute. And posters who add real value are recognized.
