The tractor has a 12 volt conversion so it may have something to do with that. It is getting dark out so early now and it would be nice to have some lights. When I first got it, a friend wanted to drive it down the road but it was almost dark and I had to say, not tonight.

QUOTE] The "usual" changeover for Farmalls to 12v is a GM "one wire" alternator. It has a built in regulator. A complete rebuild on your alternator would cost about $50 and is a good investment if it isn't putting out.. You can take it out, take it to any reputable auto electric place, have them bench test it to see. That won't cost you anything. Mine cost $55 to replace bearings , windings, new pigtail, etc. It's pretty simple to hook up. The wiring diagram previously mentioned is a good one and shows the light hookups etc. Your lights might still be 6v and were burned out when the 12v alternator was added (check the bulbs to see what they are). Original lights with the "ring" are hard to find, so if you have some hold on to them. BobG in VA

I have been getting weird looks when I'm on it from anyone driving by. They are staring with their mouths hanging open. The Yanmar doesn't quite get that reaction. That attracts people to stop and ask about it; probably because they've never seen one. I have come to realize many people don't know there are any compact tractors other than Kubotas. They ask, "Well, what is this? It's like a real tractor, only smaller." And I say, "That's exactly what it is. It's a compact tractor." Then they say, "Oh, is it like a Kubota?"

I have my Farmall A and a late '80s Kubota CUT. The Kubota has a loader, scraper, mower, top-tilt, post hole auger. The Farmall is bare; no starter, no lift, just a drawbar. The Farmall definitely gets the attention out in a crowd. It just has so much character, in addition to the classic lines. The Kubota is an awesome tractor, but side by side the Farmall wins by it's classic looks.

If you get a chance, run that H in the next parade in your area. Tons of fun!

My H doesn't look good enough to be in a parade. Whoever painted it last used a brush and it has brush marks all over. He/she painted right over the decals, too. The battery is held on by bungee cords. The rims are dented up from the previous owner forcing it onto a trailer it didn't quite fit on. Since there is no shortage of good looking antique tractors in this county, nobody would want to see mine in a parade:). Maybe someday! I think it is being stared at because it is old and has a woman perched on top of it.

Thanks for the wiring diagrams. I don't have any original lights on this tractor. The 2 mounted on the light bar are aftermarket fog lights for a truck. I don't know if they were ever connected though. The wiring is wrapped around the light bar and has the little clips on the ends. The rear work light and bracket are not there. Here is a question: if I were to find some original lights, could the bulbs be changed to 12V or should I get new, reproduction parts that I know can have 12v bulbs? Since the lights seem to be pretty expensive I will probably try to hook up those fog lights for now, but keep my eye out for original or original type lights.

A tractor club I belong to does a tractor parade every day the show runs. All tractors are welcome.. work clothes or not. There is a fellow there with a F20 I believe... It's mostly rust and grease.. has to be pulled off, and smokes and leaks bad...has mismatched tires.. and loud exhaust.. We usually let him lead the parade. it's not about looks.. it's just about being there..

That's cool! A tractor parade (and a tractor club) would be fun. There was a Christmas parade yesterday in Bowling Green (OH). I didn't see it since I was too busy getting the front tires changed on my Yanmar, but my tractor probably wouldn't have been welcome in that one. I guess ya never know though. There are always a lot of really nice antique tractors at the fair every summer. Many of them are still owned by the original family. Some of them still have the original bill of sale. My neighbor is going to be restoring another Oliver and I would like to help and learn everything I can.

Ironically.. I keep taking 'the wrong' tractor to the tractor shows, for parade driving. There are usually a bunch of big JD letter series.. some farmall letter and number series.. and minnie mo's. I've been taking a ford 2N, and an allis -g. Both have 'odd' gears for keeping up with the other's i mentioned. i found my self either tach'd out in 1st.. or barely idling in 2nd. i need to take one of my fords with a 5spd or 8spd so i can better keep up with the parade!
