Choker Cable

I recently had this choker cable made. It has a loop at each end with a sliding hook running in between. The cable I had made is 15' long. It is awesome for dragging brush piles and limbs. Lay cable out flat, pile brush / limbs, slide hook and attach loop. The harder you pull, the tighter it gets.

Just thought I'd share, since this has become extremely useful tool.

I do the same thing but with a tow strap that has the lopes on the ends. It does make it easy to drag a large pile of brush.

Yep that's what I use as it set's quick and easy. Just watch out for broken wire ends. Nylon tow straps work well and are cheap to get.
Baileys on line, Arborist site.com, Sherrill.com are probably good sources for the cable or Nylon straps.

I use a 15' piece of 5/8" 3 strand nylon rope. I back spliced one end and eye spliced the other. The rope is layed out flat, brush & limbs get piled on at a right angle to the rope, the back spliced end gets passed through the eye and I cinch it up. Two half hitches to the boom pole and away I go. The rope is nice because it doesn't have wires sticking out, is light and can be kept right next to my seat. It also works great for dragging stuff by hand - like now, when everything's wet and the tractor leaves ruts wherever I go. I've had the rope for years - it's something I made that cost next to nothing and never fails to perform.

But oh, that choker set up looks really nice for heavy stuff, cord wood and such!

I have seen the ones at bailey's and sherill, that was why I was curious about having one made. I like the on pictured above better.

Well that puts you in a definite but superior minority! Few folks these days are very adept at marlinespike seamanship.

I don't do my own wire rope work or wire to dac or nylon but I can manage most standard 3 strand rope work. I used to practice my splices and such while on multi-day sailing trips to help pass the hours of boredom between moments of stark terror.

That is all I use to for both log skidding and pulling out brush.

A tow chain from Lowes. Seems to work well for me although the choker would be better for gathering limbs/brush.

Growing up around boats learning to splice was an definite asset. Now I'm amazed at how many people helping me can't tie a simple bowline or hook up a chain properly...Anything beyond tying their shoes seems to be beyond them ;-)

I have a logging cable choker about 20' long and heavy for major work. So for my smaller log pulling I had a 3/8 cable choker made with chain on the tractor end and a regular slip bell on the log end. I made it short so it follows closer and being smaller it is easy to use. Chain end is easier to hook to the tractor and allows shortening the length. I had it made locally; don't remember the price but it wasn't much.

I too use sling chokers to pull my maple trees out of the forest. This is the most easy to use and effective tool I have found for my purposes.
