The Massey Ferguson 1736 is right in that same price range and is a super nice premium tractor.

Tan,

I cleared a 1 1/2 acres behind my current property a couple of years ago and rented a mini-ex to do all the heavy digging and grading. I then went back with my tractor and graded everything out. Just another option to think about. I am not sure how overgrown your land is but I did a whole lot of work with that mini-ex that I could not have accomplished with my tractor. I attached a few before and afters pics to give you an idea. There was a big pile of junk back there (metal tin, bricks, rock, old rusted truck, etc.) that I needed to clean up along with a bunch of trees and brush.

Hello,

I am buying my first tractor, to maintain my property in TX. It is about 15 acres, and needs work, like brush clearing, evening out the land, planting some grass, and moving debris like logs, branches, etc.

I am looking for about a ~40 HP (front) tractor, and have checked out some options:

  1. LS Tractor LS XR4140H Hydro Base Tractor ~$23,400
  2. LS Tractor LS XR4145 Hydro Base Tractor ~$26,000
  3. Kubota L3901 Hydro ~$35,000
  4. Kubota L4701 Hydro ~$29,000
  5. Kioti CK3510 HB ~ $18,900
  6. Kioti CK 4010 HB ~$20,900

I am leaning towards the LS, most likely the XR4140 with a cab.

Do you all have any thoughts on this model or pricing? Is it worth looking at Mahindra as well?

Thank you
Tan

I would have no problem buying an LS. I have looked at them a few times and been overall impressed. Bang for the buck also right now seems to be the best with them as well.

I personally think horsepower is overrated. Look at tractor weight and loader strength as well as horsepower. You don't want a light high horsepower tractor if you are doing lots of loader work or ground engaging tasks. High horsepower can allow you to use larger implements to be sure but before you buy more horsepower than needed to run six foot implements (about 40hp) check out the cost of 8 and 9 foot implement. You'll be shocked at the price jump. I'd rather mow a little longer with six foot mowers than spend close to double to get 25-50% more cut. Six feet is the sweet spot for CUT implements IMO, if you want wider then think of getting a utility size tractor (75hp and much bigger frame).

On the other hand, you don't want a wimpy loader (hello Kubota Grand L, I'm talking to you:laughing:) with a high horsepower engine and light frame UNLESS you are mostly doing finish mowing. If you are maintaining a gentleman's horse farm that might make sense. If you have land clearing or ground engaging tasks to do then the LS, Mahindra and Kioti (all excellent and comparable) are going to be much better bang for the buck.

It is like the Auto industry with packaged options, For the Grand L's in order to get a loader anything close to the Loader on your DK40, You have to get the Higher HP and cost Grand L's That is actually a strong loader. The smallest Grand L Loader can lift a few small hay bales dry manure, that's it. The mid size loader is marginal. Anyone used to a strong loader will not like it.
