Choosing the Right Tire--The Ag Elimination Rule

/ Choosing the Right Tire--The Ag Elimination Rule #51
This is one of the most infomative threads that I have read! I recently got a Ferguson TO-20 (in great shape!) and it came with almost new R-1's. Since I have about 4 acres of lawn to mow, I was afraid that the R-1's would tear up my lawn. I'm feeling alot better after reading this thread. Yesterday, I was hauling leaves on a cart (spring cleaning!) with my tractor, and they only left a mark where it's still real muddy from the melting snow. There wasn't even a mark where the lawn is just damp. The rule holds true! Thanks to all, for all this great info!

Pete, we know better. Clementine doesn't even know what grass is yet, does she? Aren't you still under XX feet of snow up there /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Okay, you got me! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif Actually, we have grass down the hill about a half mile. Well, it was grass last year and it'll be grass again in a couple of months. Right now it's sort of brown and laying flat in a semi-frozen condition. I drove Clementine down there just to get a feel for it. She seems to like the stuff, and is looking forward to seeing it upright.

At my house we still have two feet of snow on the ground. On the plus side, I can see my mower now! On the minus side, the eleven feet of snow at the top of my hill still has to melt...and the runoff goes right through my poor meadow!

Pete

Well, I just thought I would dig this post up. The talk of what kind on tires to use keeps coming up, and there is a lot of new guy here. Oh, and BTW. I have taken the advace, and gotten a set of AG tires for my Ingersoll. Does not mark up the lawn a bit./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I cant wait till the wet season to try them in the mud./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Thanks for the repost.
My situation is that I have a grey market Yanmar. Tire size is 6x12 and 9.5x22. I can get that size from Millers Tire. Now I'll be doing 90% mowing, in dry and hot SC, 1% tilling and 9% somewhat hilly woods maintainance. Also plan to cut and and pull small trees out for firewood. Anyway, I have on these very aggressive rice tires now. I just hate to drop the big bucks on tires when these have so much tread left on them. What would you guys do? Don't want to punch through turf tires in the woods, don't want to chew up grass 90% of the time either. thanks, bw

So how bad do they dig up the lawn? Now the rice tires are the ones like AG's, but with REAL tall lugs, right? Can you trim the lugs a bit? Cut them to about 1/2 hight, and they should be like AG's. Or you coud do a lot of burnouts on some pavement with them./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Yes, super tall lugs. I've heard you can cut them. Has anyone really dont this? I've got a saw that would dont the job. bw

Re: Choosing the Right Tire--The Ag Elimination Ru

I have a very steep hill so I had to replace the turfs on the JD-318 with bars (R-1s?) Track marks do not concern me so I never bother with that detail. As far as I am concerned, the 318 with the 50” MMM does a great finish job. Used in conjunction with the Kubota and they really compliment each other very well.

The L3010 wears R-4s because I use it on pavement to move a lot of rock. Additionally, the wider profile of the R-4s seems to provide stability on the hill. As for snow and ice...In Oregon it never snows. Our problem is that it never ever stops raining (that is what we tell the Californians!)

After 40 years of running Turf tires on my 1996 BOLENS I swore years ago I would never buy another new Garden tractor with turf tires.
