I have contemplated taking a trip when it's time to replace my sander truck with a less rusty one, going down to the south and or west to find another one hopefully I have 3 or 4 more years with my 1999 K20

Wow that's 180 degrees different from our experience Out West. My 1999 Subaru Outback looks close to what it looked like new, no rust whatsoever and shiny paint - and it's been parked outdoors all its life.

I can see why US average vehicle operating cost is far higher than my experience, if early retirement due to rust is common.

Our 1997 Dodge 1500 pickup has 2-3" missing all the way around the fenderwells from rust, the cab corners and rockers are rusted out and the bottoms of the doors are starting to rust off... Salt is hard on cars and Dodge has not yet figured out how to make paint that keeps it out...

Yes this pickup is in pretty good shape for this area, not a lot of visible rust, the cab and door corners are bad.
Many of them can't pass inspection from rusted frames.

Same here regarding inspection but it is the emission inspection that does them in...
