I never extend warranties. Unless you're expecting some repair you just absolutely cannot afford, you're better playing the odds on your own dime. Extended warranty costs are very carefully analyzed to make money for the seller, in the aggregate, not the buyer.

I'm not a big fan of them but I have purchased them on my last 4 vehicle purchases. Knock on wood so far they have been unnecessary expenses, but well worth it from a peace of mind standpoint. The cost can usually be bargained down to a couple of thousand so a couple of thousand on a 40-60,000 purchase it is worth it to me. If I was young enough to still be doing all of my own work I would look at them differently most likely.

But just out of curiosity, what's the sum-total cost on those 4 unused extended warranties?

Under $7000 and two are still in force, a couple of more years on the pickup and 8 years on my wife's new car.

I've found that most things will fail in the first couple years of use if they're going to before they're really worn out.

Definitely never get a warranty for electronics; they'll either work, or not work, in very few cycles you'll know.
I bought extended warranties on my first couple of cars but never made use of them; didn't get one on my truck and 27 years later I can say even if I'd paid $2000 for an extended warranty for 25 years (something that positively doesn't exist of course) it wouldn't've paid for itself.

With all the ridiculous features on new cars, if I was going to buy all that, I'd consider an extended warranty just because all that crap is really expensive and does break, but I have no plans to buy a fancy package on any car.

I also extend vehicle warranties. Shop labor rates are $150/hr + and going higher. Parts are insanely high.

That’s right. Quick story. When I first bought my Ram, I lost a front axle spindle & hub. It was covered under warranty. Just out of curiosity, I asked service mgr what the cost was. I forget exact number, but it was like $2,500. I think the CP-4 to CP-3 replacements were north of $10,000. Again, covered under a recall, but who wants to pay for that.
Tech at Ram told me my center stack is like $5,000 bucks!

My neighbor who is an auto dealership general manager told me to recover some value from extended warranties a couple months before they expire. Take the vehicle to the dealership and tell them to replace any dripping seal or anything covered under the warranty that looks questionable. Let them keep the vehicle for a few days and they can go over it completely. Most often they find hundreds or thousands of dollars of warrantable minor repairs.

You think a dealer is going to put a tech on your car to “go over it for a few days” to find problems?
