I have put a hydraulic cilinder on my snowblower to turn the chute. Seems to work fine, but if I am not very carefull with the hydraulic handle, the chute turns in less than a second. I would like to slow it down to 3 or 4 seconds.

pump capacity tractor is 7 gals/min, system pressure 2490 psi
the lenght of the cilinder is 12"
the diameter of the rod is 3/4"

If I put a restrictor in the line, how small of a hole do I need ? Does any one have some experience with this?

Can you install a needle valve in the cap end of the cylinder. This would allow you to fine tune the speed. If you get one that restricts in both directions you would only need the one valve.

Probably the best way is to use a needle valve instead of a fixed restrictor - check out surplus hydraulics, they're about $10-20. That way you can dial in the EXACT speed you want.

If the fittings in your pic are regular pipe fittings though, you will probably want to get some high pressure replacements - the restrictor will likely raise pressures to the point that you won't get away with plumbing fittings any more... Steve

Hey Oldnslo, guess great minds/same track (or maybe twisted the same direction  Steve

30 thousandths. You really should have hydraulic fittings. I believe those plumbing fittings are only tested to 300psi. Not a safe thing to be using when you are putting 2000+ psi through them.

x2

You really need to get hydraulic fittings. Water pipe fittings should NEVER be used in a high pressure hydraulic circuit.

Something like this https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=9-7961-4&catname=hydraulic is really what you need.

As well as a handfull of these https://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?catname=hydraulic&keyword=HFNN that are the right size.

Moving the cylinder mount to the outer edge of the arc will drop your speed in half also.

Dang smart alec geometry students:laughing:

any fittings in the system should be rated above the system relief.

IE.. use grey iron fititngs at your own risk.

personally.. a restrictor orifice is cheap and easy.. and if it restricts too much.. drill it out trial and error. :) but then I'm cheap. :) and sometimes easy.. :)

What it refers to is flow control and direction.

if you only install one flow control valve you
will have wide open speed flow in the opposite
direction.

It it better to install two needle valves on the two swing cylinder port fittings.

For this you will need:

2 female pipe to pipe thread needle valves either 3/8 or 1/2 inch.

These are referred to as either a number 6 female to number six female thread needle valve
or a number 8 female to number 8 female femal thread needle valve.

4 JIC male to pipe thread fittings for the two hose to needle valve connections,

these will be either;

Number 6 Male JIC to 6 male pipe

Number 8 Male JIC to 8 male pipe

The JIC designation is the Joint Industrial Council designation for a 37 degree high pressure male or female hydraulic fitting.

About thread sealing:

Use only a very tiny amount of teflon thread sealer (barely one drop) for the male pipe fittings that enter the needle valves only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not use any liquid or tape thread sealing compound on the 37 degree tapered fittings as it will
damge the connection and break the the JIC female swivel fittings- YES THEY WILL BREAK!!!
