Circuit City

Read these articles regarding Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City and big screen T.V.s.

Like many people, I suppose, we do a lot of business with Walmart; most of our groceries and lots of other stuff. However, when it comes to a product that might need service or repair, or a product about which I need more information, such as TVs, computers, cameras, and other electronics, I just don't want to buy from Walmart or Sam's Club (or Costco, although we don't have a Costco membership).

Much can be said, both good and bad, about Walmart, and yes, I guess they do "roll back" some prices at times, but how many people have noticed when they roll the price the other direction and the manner in which they do it? Not too long ago, they quit stocking my favorite breakfast sausage, priced at $5.84. But after a month or two, they started selling it again, but the price is now $8.84. And I like sliced, canned new potatoes and Walmart's Great Value brand is as good as the higher priced name brands. They've been 50 cents a can for some time, but 2 or 3 weeks ago they disappeared from the shelves of the 2 Walmart stores nearest us. But two days ago, they reappeared at 68 cents a can. The same thing happened when the 4# bags of Country Pride Wild Bird Food at 94 cents disappeared from the shelves. But after 2 or 3 weeks, it came back at $1.38 and now up to $1.47.

So, yes, I look at Walmart's electronics sometimes for a bit of price comparison, but I'm not likely to buy electronics there, and many times their price isn't really any better than Best Buy, Sears, Circuit City, etc.

And in that time, more electronics have moved to commodity status. Cheaper to buy new than fix.....

I went to CC last month to buy either a new SD card for my phone to store mp3 files OR just buy a new mp3 player. Ended up buying a new player. Its really nifty. :D I had looked online and I think I could have bought the same thing a few dollars cheaper but I wanted it now. Radio Shack had the same device on sale but $20 higher.

The wifey reminded me that our DVD player, a Sony that is maybe 4 years old will not play to the end of a movie. So we went and bought another $100 DVD player. Really expected more from a Sony. I tried to clean the head blah blah blah but the thing was shot. I even tried to take it apart. I think it could be fixed with a drop of oil but I could not get that far into the DVD player. You have a great big empty box with this wee little DVD player. :(:D The wee little drive I just could not get into without tearing everything up.

I have read that Walmart is poised to claim some of the business that Circuit City has. The article said that Walmart plans to expand the electronics dept and offer more products. We will see...

Maybe Circuit City just needs to open more stores next to Best Lie stores. :)

The C C store that will close here was built about 3-4 yrs. ago right next to HH Greg & Besy Buy

I really can't figure out how Kmart has lasted so long...the local stores are always dirty and they are higher on everything they have than WalMarts down the street...

KMart is under the same ownership as Sears. A lot of people can't figure out how they have survived, either.

If I'am not mistaken, K-mart actually bought Sears. Don't know how that happened. I thought Sears would have bought out K-mart

You are not mistaken. KMart bought Sears. I only know of one KMart within 30 miles of us. Never been in it and it may well be closed. I have not been over that way in a few years.

When we bought the place in Navarro County the end of 1994, K-Mart had a big distribution center in Corsicana. They also had a super center that was open 24 hours a day. They had a serious problem with the cash registers ringing up larger amounts than the posted prices. All our neighbors complained about it. The store management had to know about it. For instance, one day I bought a one pound package of cheese and the cashier rung it up at a dollar more than the posted price. When I called her attention to it, she changed it. But a week later, I bought another package of the same thing and it still rung up a dollar too high. In other words, they had not corrected it in a week. Then they started closing at night, and finally they shut down the store entirely. And the K-Mart distribution center was one of the major employers in Corsicana and they shut that down as well. I've recently noticed some K-Mart commercials on the TV; don't remember just what channel since we have DirecTV, but I don't even know where you could find a K-Mart now in this area.
