I have a ck35 shuttle. Love the tractor, hate the loader capacity. I made a mistake 9 months ago when I bought it and should have bought the DK40. I'm not having any success in trading up. I know the DK's are extinct, but I did find a dealer who says it's still a possibility.
Question is, If I can trade up, what is a fair amount I should expect to pay? I'd like to keep it at right around 10k cash. The deal would be my ck35 shuttle with 150 hours, for a new DK40, hydrostatic and 10k. Is this possible, or am I dreaming?

I would say you're not dreaming if you can find a DK. A CK with 150 hrs in good condition is probably worth about 12-14K. I waz quoted a DK45 HST w/ loader cash at 22K in August, so you're in the area for sure. I would think that finding a DK would be the hardest part, they were almost extinct 4 months ago when I looked.

I think that's definitely possible. As somebody who's made the trade you're thinking about, believe me, you will not be disappointed and will NEVER regret it. The loader goes from ...blah... to awesome.

Yeah, I'm really getting my hopes up. I like the ck, got attached to the old girl. I just need a more powerful loader.

I about bought the ck when tractor shopping... It fit the budget real well but once I found this forum said budget was thrown into the garbage can:) The dk has been great...The stout lift capacity is a bonus.

I was advised on this forum to hold out for the DK instead of buying a CK, but I didn't listen. Thats why I'm in this predicament today!

I hate to disagree but I don't think it can be done at that price. The dealer will not pay you retail for a used tractor he will want to turn a profit after all he is taking a risk by having to find a buyer. That with a desire of some looking for a tier 3 Kioti may have the supply and demand working against you. That being said you will love the DK line I know I'm enjoying mine. Best of luck on your search.

I traded my 05 CK30 FEL w/backhoe (450hrs) +$10K for a DK40 FEL a year ago. Wish I had kept the CK.

My number was just a guesstimate, but if the CK is tier 3 it might be a plus for it. Can't hurt to ask though.

I had R4's on both tractors but the DK's tires are more aggressive and have less surface area, coupled with the fact the DK is heavier, it tears up my yard more. I wish I had gotten the 'turf' tires. Even with loaded rear tires they spin easier tearing the yard up more and I find I have to use 4wd more often to prevent it. Although flipping a switch to engage the 4wd is much nicer than fighting with the lever on the CK. The FEL doesn't seem to lift that much more, even though it is spec'ed to lift twice as much. DK stalls easier. When I take my foot off the forward pedal... the tractor keeps driving forward. This leads to stalling often when moving piles of dirt and it is worse in winter moving snow. I have even pressed on the reverse pedal and the tractor keeps driving forward for a moment. I prefer the single pedal HST control of the CK vs the dual pedal of the DK. After 48 hrs, I keep pressing the wrong pedal and going in the wrong direction. I have damage to my tractor hut to repair due to this. The single pedal was much more intuitive to me. I feel the FEL is painfully slow compared to the one on the CK. When I move the FEL control to 'dump' the bucket... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I found the CK just generally more maneuverable than the DK. I put a Woods BH90x backhoe on the DK, it doesn't seem much more powerful than the Kioti BH that was on the CK. Between the DK upcharge and the Wood BH.. at the moment I feel I threw away $20k. The DK will be going in for its 50 hr service in the spring, I am really hoping some of these issues will be fixed then.

I think your experience is very instructive.

I'm from the school that bigger IS NOT always better. I find it interesting how many folks advocate quickly buying a bigger tractor than may be needed.

In our household, we insisted that our tractor dealers let us live with the tractors, (use at our home for the weekend), we considered before making a final purchase decision. With a little friendly give and take we accomplished this and I feel we made better purchase decisions accordingly.

Good post Jim, I never had a hst, so I won't be able to compare the ck35 shuttle. As far as tires are concerned you raise a good point. Which tires would be better for plowing snow, turf or industrial?
I really need a better loader, love the ck but the loader is lacking.

I wanted a better loader as well, but the DK loader doesn't seem much better, it is definitely slower. I am hoping that the hydraulic pressure is low as both the loader and the backhoe don't seem as strong as I was expecting. I have no idea which tire would be better for plowing snow, I have never run turf tires. I run V-bar chains front and rear in the winter and as long as I don't stall it.. it is like a bulldozer. With the ice we occasionally get on our dirt road, chains are a must, not an option.

If all three tires are compared in snow, without chains on any of them, most people have reported that turf tires offer an advantage. I don't think any of them are any good on slick ice without chains. I don't know what the problem is with IXLR8's machine, but my HST DK35se tractor does not run forward when you let off of the peddle, it stops immediately, it has never stalled, its loader response (cylinder response) is extremely fast, and it will lift every bit of its rated 1430 pounds to full height. The DK40se loader response will be a bit slower as shown in the specs, because the pump has only slightly more flow and the cylinders are bigger. To lift more you must have larger diameter cylinders, and of course they take longer to fill unless your flow rate is increased. My machines loader is so fast, that when I first got it and traded off my Kubota L3400hst I was concerned about how fast it was compared to the Kubota. It took me a couple of days to get used to it. The flow rate of the Kioti's pump is much greater than the Kubota, and the cylinders are only slightly larger, with about 300 more lbs of lift. So yeah, it is fast, real fast. But after using it for a while, I really enjoy it, and make use of the "snappy" loader response to get more work done in a shorter period of time.

So in summation, The DK40se loader response will be a bit slower than your CK. Example to raise the boom on the CK to full height is 3.9 seconds, to retract the bucket is 2.4 seconds. On the DK40se raise boom is 4.5 seconds but the retract bucket is only 2.1 seconds. So they have placed the largest cylinder on the raise boom. But the DK40's loader WILL lift over twice as much.

I can tell you this, Going from the 1100 lbs of lift on the Kubota L3400hst with the La463 loader to the Kioti DK35se with the KL351 loader is day and night difference. More than the 300 lbs published difference.
