I may soon be able to afford a compact TLB to plow and landscape on about 3 acres. I'd like to be able to dig up surfaces with the loader w/o having to break up soil with the hoe. I'd also like to hoist log sections for benches and borders, and move rocks up to 800# or so. The CK20 HST looks just about right.

Since the ground up here in MA is frozen, I can't do a live test. A very honest dealer suggested that the CK20 doesn't really have the oomph for this; may not even be able to take a full bite when run into a pile of 1" gravel, and won't bite into hard ground.

The CK25/30 are not only more $$, but are really too big for my garage and the buckets are too wide for plowing some of my paths.

Any user comments on power with this machine?

Thanks!

There are plenty of CK20 owners on the forum that can give you first hand experiences, but I think you will be fine. The CK20 is probably the best of the 20 hp machines on the market. The loader is very strong for a tractor of its size, although an 800# rock is probably not going to be lifted high and loaded into the back of a truck. You will likely be able to lift the rock off the ground and move it, you just might not be able to lift it high. This is common with many loaders, they often can lift an object that is too heavy, but they often can not lift it to full height. I'm a big fan of small powerful tractors, the CK20 will probably surprise you with how much it is capable of doing.

i've had my ck20hst TLB a/k/a the "DMV" (driveway maintenance vehicle) since april 04. i am still amazed at what the little 20hp can do. i have dug up some good size stumps, hauled full buckets of wet concrete (right from the truck) when we did our patios, and use a 60" grader blade to rip up and level out my 700' dirt drive way. my property is on the side of a mountain so the soil is a heavy clay and lots of big rocks... the ck20 even with the hst does a great job.... i too was thinking that 30hp might be better, but the dollars were hard to justify.... any big jobs just take a little longer with the ck 20, but that just means more seat time... good luck with your selection... oh yeah... my wife loves to use it as well...

i forgot to mention that a good toothbar is a worthwhile attachment to to help dig with the bucket... i keep mine on just tight enought to do the job at hand and then take it right off when not needed....

I bought the CK20 gear w/FEL and backhoe in september because it was much cheaper than anything else comparible. My previous tractor was a B7200 kubota and I knew what it could do and the Kioti was a little more HP (21 versus 17) which I wanted for PTO attachments. I don't think there are any tractors out there that are under powered, its usually because someone (including myself) out there is trying to do more than there tractor is capable of. The FEL will lift the arse end of my tractor off the ground without any weight on the rear (i had to try), the backhoe will pull the front end off the ground or lift the backend off the ground if you want to. The backhoe has exceeded what I thought it would do as far as power goes. The tractor will run my 42" tiller with ease, the blower I'm sure will not be a problem as my Kubuta ran it no problem. When its comes to plowing snow, when I can't push anymore I know I'm to the tractors limit (almost 8' high snow banks now and expexcting at least another foot tommorrow). We've had 16-18" so far in the past week and I haven't had to use my blower yet, but I'm expecting that to change after tommorrow. So don't think its underpowered, "I" think that some people think the Kioti's are underpowered because they bog down when they are loaded up, "my" theory is that it's because they are so heavy that traction is the reason that this is happening. The power is actually getting put to the ground and not being thrown up from a spinning tire thus stalling. Its almost a similar comparison to an HST bypassing when its power limit is reached, you no the time has come to back off as you've reached your limit. Sorry, I'm babbling again, I'm just killing time til the next snow clearing operation.
I also based my decision on the fact that Kioti invested in a major distribution center in the States, which led me to believe that they are committed to making a go of it over here as Kubota did back in the early 80's when I bought the B7200. I'm think I'm giving Kioti the same chance that I gave Kubota when they came to this market. At that time Kubota was cheaper than JD. I'm really gonna go this time though.

I also live in Massachusetts and purchased a CK20HST with FL in May of this year. All summer long I have had rough fill brought in to level off my lot. By rough fill, I mean rough, pieces of granite blocks, big chunks of cement, etc. I would get sometimes three 18 yard loads brought in one day. It would take me about two hours to level those loads out. If it would have been clean fill and I wouldn't of had to pick where I would put these huge chunks of cement and rocks, I could have leveled it much quicker. The CK 20 would get a full bucket of dirt every time with a little practice. Using a FL takes a little practice also. BTW, I did have the rear tires loaded because I did not get the backhoe attachment. So far this little tractor has satisfied me with the power of both the engine, and the hydraulics. I would rather have the hydraulics go in by-pass than break something on the FL. I have forced the tractor into the piles of dirt enough to spin the front and rear tires at the same time, not all four, but one in front and one in rear. Even with the rear tires loaded, I have lifted some dirt with chunks of rocks, and cement to the point where one of the rear tires came up off the ground. The snow this winter thus far has not been any kind of challenge for this tractor. The challenge is getting the tractor started. I have to crank it about 8 to 10 times before it will start and keep running. I will be installing a block heater this spring. Also, the keyloack froze on me several times. Injected some WD40 and unfroze the lock. My tractor sets outside all the time although I have been covering it with a larg tarp. I have a new SIMS cab coming from Canada next month. Really anxious for that to land. The tractor cranks perfectly okay and will start right up, but as with any diesel it takes it a while to get the compression and heat in the cylinders up high enough for it to keep running. Just one thing I wish Kioti would rethink. The shuttle peddle for the HST is perfect, but I wish Kioti would have found a better place for the huge filter that sits right behind your foot. It gets in my way alot, maybe my foot is just too big, 11-1/2. All in all, I'm very happy with my CK20 HST and am really glad I got the HST. I was considering the shuttle shift but glad I got the HST instead. When working with it in dirt and especially in the snow, the hydr works much more fluently and it's easy getting a rythm going. Now if we could just get the dumping of the bucket to match the rest of the works, we would have a perfect machine. BTW, I use a product called Stanadyne Diesel Conditioner, recommended from a high school friend that has spent all his life rebuilding diesel pumps and injectors, and his father done the same thing. Son took over after father died. So he knows what he is doing and talking about. It replaces the lubricants that have been removed from diesel in the recent future to adhere to EPA requirements. 1 bottle will condition 60 gallons so it is worth the extra money and effort to dump some in the 5 gallon jug before fillup. This stuff helps prevent fuel gelling, waxing and freeze-up in cold weather, lowers fuel pour point as much as 40 deg.F, increases fuel cetane rating, combats rust and corrosion, and cleans and lubricates the Diesel Fuel Injection System. I think a bottle costs like nine bucks if I remember. Anyway, we are supposed to get whopped with 18 to 24" of snow today into tomorrow, so the Kioti will get it's ultimate test in snow removal. Although from what I have done with this little beast this summer in moving dirt, snow is not going to pose any problems I'm sure. I'll probably wished I had a bigger bucket is all. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you've read any of my old posts, you'll know that I would disagree wholeheartedly with that dealer's statement.
With proper rear ballast, there's not reason the CK20 wouldn't lift the 800# rock. I've lifted that much with the backhoe on the back with no problem.
As for digging with the FEL, that's not really the function of an FEL, but it can be done, toothbar recommended.
Going into a pile of gravel, moving the bucket properly for loading, you come out full, every time if you do it right. Some people seem to think you just move straight in with the bucket and come out with a load. There's more to it than that. You work the bucket angles as you go in and sometimes curl/uncurl and manipulate the hydro pedal forward and back till your buckets properly filled, you'll get a load.
The CK20 is an awesome tractor for it's size, and I always do way more than anyone seems to think I can with it.
I got the TLB and boxblade for $16,681.00 + sales tax back in January of 04, and have not looked back since. Prices are about 2-3% higher this year due to steel increases, but they're still a good deal. This was from $2000 -to $3500 cheaper than comparable models from some other "brand" name tractors. aosbill & chelydra, First off...Welcome to TBN!

The snow this winter thus far has not been any kind of challenge for this tractor. The challenge is getting the tractor started. I have to crank it about 8 to 10 times before it will start and keep running.

In very cold weather, if your tractor is starting hard, try cycling the glow plugs a second time and even a third time if the tractor is struggling to start.......

I have forced the tractor into the piles of dirt enough to spin the front and rear tires at the same time, not all four, but one in front and one in rear.

Try engaging the rear differential lock with your left heal next time your workin' dirt and see if you get any additional traction.

Even with the rear tires loaded, I have lifted some dirt with chunks of rocks, and cement to the point where one of the rear tires came up off the ground.

Hanging a weight box or heavy implement off the three point will add counter weight further back which should give some additional stability.

Once again, Welcome to TBN /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you read any of my previous posts, I was probably one of the most vocal about power problems. I have since had the power to the wheels issue resolved, but even in the midst of the problem that I saw, I NEVER had a gripe about actual engine power. It is a strong little engine on an extremely heavy duty tractor (that just happens to measure small dimensionally). I've had my 5ft rotary cutter backing into honeysuckles that were taking over 20ft tall apple trees. It ate it up.

aosbill,

Do you know that you can hold the glow plugs on as long as you need by turning the key to the glow plug position and then go a little bit further to bring the glowplugs on but not start the tractor? This is a spring loaded position, so if you let go it will go back to the preset glow plug timer. There is a post on the somewhere, no sure where but I will try to find it your still having trouble. Let us know as the tractor should start not problem if the glowplugs have been on for a sufficient time.
