If you aren't using the PTO and are going open station, the DK40 will be fine. Otherwise, that's not too much to ask for another 5hp.

Is $295 per horsepower ($1480 for the 5ph) worth it?

Offer the dealer to split the difference? $700. Especially if you are buying the BH and all the accessories - Grapple and more from him - there is more margin in whole package I would think. What that margin is I don't know but would expect 10-12% off the tractor, and maybe 15-18% off the accessories like grapple, BH, etc.

You can search here for what others have paid for DK40-45 there are quite a few of them here, but it's also regional to some degree with local competition and then volume that will dictate price.

I regret getting my 32hp L3200 instead of the L3800. same 2,500lbs tractor, just 6 extra HP on the engine for around a grand more. The 15% power hit for my HST over a gear is worth it, but pushing at a pile with the loader & running the tiller could use a few extra HP. Well, at least after I loaded the tires, before that I was traction limited.

I pulled the trigger and bought the DK40se HST with AG tires, 60" FEL with welded hooks, backhoe, 12" & 24" BH buckets, and free delivery all for 28,450. They also threw in a full day's DK45se hst rental, including gas & delivery (I need to test it to see if it fit in the barn). I also had them set the AG tires at 64 inches for a little extra breathing room. The extra 6 inches of width clearance made all the difference. Now I'm happy, really happy. When they dropped off the wider rental DK for me to use for a day I didn't like driving it. Too close for comfort and I'm the type that really likes to the limits on anything I drive / operate... "How close I'm I too the edge? No no, I can get closer." I actually dreaded the thought of driving the wider DK which is why I kept going back to the CK.

Anyway, thanks so much for all the great advice. I wouldn't have made the step up without it.

Did you get the thumb on your BH and any loader valves (for grapple in the future)?
