I've had good success with the following steps:

1. Go crazy with the RoundUp in early spring when they are starting to sprout and grow. This is the best time to apply a herbicide.

2. Mow frequently and low to the ground. Eventually, the grass will take over.

3. Selective Herbicides also help. Crossbow and Weed-B-Gone both work well for me.

I've gotten rid of acres of Blackberries with the above steps. I really like Ortho Weed-B-Gone because it doesn't seem to hurt the grass at all and even at a low concentration can still hurt the blackberries. Depending on how aggressive you are with the spraying you can convert some pretty ugly land pretty quickly.

Of course, there are always those anti-herbicide people that will have a differing opinion about the use of chemicals. But until it's against the law I'll be using them.
