Thanks guys! Here is my backhoe to-do list so far:
90' propane line (done!)
90' well water line
140' septic tank to lateral field pipe
gutter drain system to get water far from house
sprinkler system (this is a maybe, not too high on the priority list)
dig footers for 30x40 shop
shape ground and dig footers for approx. 200' long retaining wall
put in a few french drains
dig out several stumps and small trees
perform who knows how many projects for friends and family now that they know I own a backhoe!! lol
I have to read up on french drains for gravel roads. My driveway is on a slight slope and in the woods. There are large trees that I want to keep right next to the driveway, so digging a ditch along the driveway is out of the question (at least to my knowledge it is). I believe I can put in shallow french drains on the uphill side before it gets to my gravel and then cross under the drive every so often with PVC pipe to transfer the water to the downhill side. I seen a post by someone that done something similar but would have to search a while to find it.
Right now I have a very thin layer of gravel on the driveway and I won't finish it until after all construction is done and the truck traffic will be reduced to almost nothing.
