Thomas -- She looked fairly young. Bigger than the Honda but not quite as large as the Pathfinder yet. Last year we had a cow and her calf take a dip in our pond. The year before I was in the forest with four of my dogs when a HUGE bull moose crossed the logging road not 100' from us! Never seen one that big before. Thank goodness all four dogs just sat down and wagged their tails at the sight of it.

We have a bit of wildlife up here. Our 150 acres are surrounded by 3000 acres of forest, which are surrounded by miles and miles of state forest land. Lots of deer, a few black bear, wild turkeys, fisher cats, snow hares, owls and hawks, and now moose.

Hey Pete,
We even have a few Moose here in "urban" Williston. Closest I ever got to a live one was a touch less than 5'. Big bull. Didn't mean to get that close!!! He decided to change directions and must not have seen me in the dim light. Walked right by. That was on Isle Royal, the national park in Lake Michigan where they're pretty used to humans. Closest I've come in VT was 15' or so when one jumped out of the trees in front of my wife when we were riding on South Rd in Williston. My wife and a friend stopped in the road about 10 feet from the moose, and the two of them just looked at this moose who stood there a couple of seconds before crashing off through the woods. I didn't stop, just rode around. Glad he didn't mistake the bikes for something worth charging.
Last year or the year before, we had one wander into the parking garage at the Fletcher Allen Hospital. And one of the Cardiologists here almost skate-skied into the tail end of one on Mt Mansfield. Came around a turn and had to backpedal pretty quick. Realistically, that one is a bit scary. I'm told they'll kick if you startle them, and Bob said he was out alone with a head light on. Getting kicked by a dinner plate sized hoof just doesn't sound like fun!

So Rob, where are you that you see so many of these goofy critters, that you don't still get a kick out of them??

Todd

ps) Pete, you inspired me to name my tractor. Pebbles. When I add a bigger one or a back hoe, it will have to be Bam Bam.

Todd, I'm no where near moose territory (N. Indiana/SW. Michigan), I just have some bad cabin fever myself lately. When Pete made the comment about seeing a moose it just struck me as something I could imagine while daydreaming about spring (in fact, I think I just saw a John Deere cruise by... no I was day dreaming again/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif).

I've never seen a live moose outside of a zoo. It must be quite a sight /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Large animals

Rob -- In a previous life I taught grad school out in San Diego Cal. Out in the North County a wildebeast escaped from the Wild Animal Park, and some poor bleached blonde in a Mazda Miata hit it from the rear. I remember the news coverage quite clearly. The woman was rather buxom, and the rear of the wildebeast slid up the hood and thru the windshield before getting hung up on the steering wheel. The poor animal loosed its bowels in the woman's lap, and the poor woman was pinned in the car by the animal's butt. I distinctly remember the news camera was up on a boom that gave a great shot of cleavage, and the firemen working to free her were VERY helpful. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and even the wildebeast was only bruised. But the car was totalled.

Rob, Take the ferry up to isle royal for a few days. right off the upper peninsula (houghton??) They come right into the campgrounds, since the wolves avoid humans.

My wife and I had a backpacking trip on Isle Royale planned but never squeezed it in before kids. Maybe in a few years, as the kids get old enough, we can put it back on the list. At this point, Mackinaw Island is more our speed /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
