There's also another possibility that the fuel return line fitting is plugged with debris. A plugged return line will allow engine to start/die,start/die

Is that the line that attaches to the top of the fuel tank?

To answer your question, yes.
More than likely, the problem is air in the system. You may have to bleed the injector lines at the injectors before it will start.

Speaking of return lines, I had a rubber T go bad on an injector on a 4240 yesterday, I had fuel all over the side of the motor. They now went to all brass fittings on those and eliminated the rubber.

More than likely, the problem is air in the system. You may have to bleed the injector lines at the injectors before it will start.

My experience with JD diesels is that if they will start running for a short period and die,then start back up & die unless air is removed(purged) at and before inj pump bleeding injector lines will not solve running problems. Plus if check valve in the fuel return line happens to be plugged then bleeding injectors will not get engine to run.

Parts key #4 is the return line and PARTS KEY # 29 is the fitting with the possible plugged check valve

I'm curious as to your 4240's engine sn as I don't see the parts substitution that you stated your dealer performed. Here's the rubber tee that you stated was subbed by dealer. T23425 BOOT,NOZZLE LEAK-OFF ADD 5.01 USD

I'm not sure on the serial # right now. We picked up the parts today. It's all metal. There's metal tubes that have some sort of rubber gasket in them that slip over the injectors where the T's went. Then the T screws on that, and then there are 5 pieces of line that I think screws on between all the metal T's. I didn't look at it closely yet, Dad got back with it when I was about to go home this evening. Parts guy said he didn't think there was any around that had the rubber T's anymore. I looked at our 4440 and it's got the rubber T's on it too still. I think the metal parts will be easier to replace since it's all in pieces. The Rubber T's are on one line that runs from front to back. I think the only way to get it back in would be to take all the injector lines loose. I don't know how dad got it out without bending the line. At first, we thought the line was in pieces held together with the clamps.

I think I found what they replaced these with, R79606 are the metal T's. The lines are (1) RE1506 (2)RE15807 and (2) RE1508. Plus misc. other washers and stuff. It's found under Fuel injection nozzles for 6466DR.

The reason I brought up about the SN is the fact that if you read the parts descriptions & footnotes for parts keys 35-42 nowhere does it mention subbing the parts for T23425 BOOT that your dealer sold you Dad. The engine sn break is < - 576677. The T23425 boots have been utilized by JD since the 60's. I remember them from when I stood behind a JD parts counter for several yrs.

We put it on this morning and it worked. I noticed that they don't sub it, I think they still have the old parts available. They just decided to go this route.
