close call with a tele.pole guide/support cable

The hole is about 30 ' long 25 ' wide and 12 ' deep.
It's on my property but is in the state Rite of Way.
They have a large culvert at the bottom going under the road so I can't just haul in trucks of dirt and dump them in it.

Wow, that hole is huge, thats as big as a swimming pool. I think you need to contact the state and get something done about that.

Had it happened then my tractor would have been wiped out and me rite along with it.

That would have been a shame to have your BX-23 wiped out, you would of had to change that extra text on your posts about how much you paid for your tractor three or four years ago.

Have you contacted ODOT or any other department at the state level concerning this issue?
a state issue though, since you live on a state route.

Do you have any pictures of this so others can understand what you are describing?

YEP - but no results even after a 17 year old girl was killed several years ago in about the same spot.

I have one of those guy wires in my yard. I manage to keep my tractor away from it. I worry about my grandson who rides his go cart around the yard. I worry every time he rides that thing. I warn him to stay away from that wire;every time he rides. I think he's tired of hearing it already.

I have one out in the horse pasture and cut a 4" PVC pipe down on side and slipped it over the guy wire from the groundup to about 6 feet, keeps both the horses and me from running into it....

put some fence posts in the ground between the pole and the anchor end of the wire. or run some peices of pvc from the wire to the pole.

I now have just one guy wire on this pole.
One of them was removed about 3 pm today by a woman who ran off the road and went air born twice down through my front yard before landing in a 12 foot deep hole . On her way there she clipped one of the guy wires off the pole.

Turns out she gave the police an out dated insurance card.
When I contacted the insurance agent they told me her policy was canceled in 2004.
So much for mandatory insurance.
This makes twice in a row I've suffered damages from someone that didn't have insurance.
Like I told my wife compulsory insurance sure does protect everyone else against me but it don't protect me from anybody!

I used to work on a line crew during the summers when I was in college. There is nothing arbitrary about guy wire position. It is positioned precisely to counteract the weight of the wire the pole is supporting. As mentioned, the poles in a straight line don't need guy wires except on the ends. A wire is also needed whenever there is an angle in the course of the line. The electrical, phone and cable that these poles support are incredibly heavy especially between long spans. The pole holds them up, the guy wire holds the pole up.

As for anchors, they should unscrew. When placed, the anchor rod is attached to a bell shaped piece of metal by a welded on nut. You drop it in the hole and use a special tamp rod that fits over the anchor rod and busts the bell down flat. To remove the anchor rod, just unscrew it. I've removed hundreds of these things, but occasionally you run into one where the nut is rusted on or has broken at the weld and just spins. Sometimes it takes a lot of force with a bar through the anchor eye to break it loose. When we couldn't break them loose, we did just as mentioned and dug down two or three feet and cut it off with a saw.

I'm a big fan of underground utilities but there is no sense in complaining about guy wires if you want phone and electric. Sure, petition the utilities for underground supply, but it is expensive and if you want it, be prepared to pay for it.

A lot of people have horses around here and on virtually every horse farm I see, the owners have tied long orange streamers on the guy wires. A very good idea. Recently, crews cleared the right of ways in the county where my property is and before they brought in the mowers and Kershaws someone came through and tied streamers on all the guy wires. I have three on my property and plan on putting streamers on them to pervent me from getting into it with the tractor and the kids ffrom hitting it while riding horses.

i have a guy wire (and pole) in the middle of my front lawn. but it was installed within the past year or so so it has a yellow plastic condom on the guywire for the bottom 10' or so. They are required to put these on anywere people my be walking (ie THERES A GUY WIRE HEAR YOU IDIOT)

guywires are usually figured into the design of new faclities. My wife when laying out new subdivisions will have to get with the local utility to have them mark were they will be putting guy wires and she then has to go back and make shure nothing is interfering with them. If theres an issue then they will work together to find a solution that works for everyone if the fix isnt simple.

as for the ancors, we removed one on my uncles place. took a rock/stone bar (6' tall steel bar) put in the loop and it was still difficult to turn. I got SOOOO tired of walking in circules... me and my cousin took turns. we walked in circles for like 20 min. the ancor was like 5' tall with a auger looking thing on the end.

Hasn't worked like that for me. I can't even get the cable Co. to come out here and look at the situation to discuss it with me.
