At work we have a one year old 40 something hp Kubota tractor. Sorry I don't know the model. This tractor has an HST transmission. I don't run it very often, but when I do I always wonder what purpose does the clutch serve. I'am sure there is a reason for it to operate this tractor properly.
Thanks, eddy

If I could change anything about my Kubota L5030, it would be to eliminate the clutch. I only use mine to start the tractor and for nothing else. The Operator Manual indicates it is to be depressed when placing it in 4WD or when changing between HI, MED, Low, but I can tell absolutely no difference in ease of operation by using the clutch.

Oh, sometimes I use it on my rotary cutter to let the mower engage smoothly.

It is used to engage the PTO (you will break shear pins on rotary cutter shafts if you don't) and should be used when changing between Low Medium and High gearing. Plus on the new ones, the tractor won't start without depressing the clutch.

Page #47 of my L5030 indicates only to engage PTO by using the Clutch Control Lever with no mention of using the foot clutch. Not that it is a bad idea, but you won't break anything by following the Manual and simply engage the PTO Clutch Control Lever slowly.

Thanks RRR - I have been switching mine from 2wd to 4wd without the clutch wondering if I would break anything but I know you have a lot more experience than me so I am not sweating it anymore. Did it on my last 'Bota for a few years and never had a problem. Mine is only a b3200 but I would guess it works the same way just smaller.

I feel not good to exit tractor while in..L.M.H range also don't trust F/R pedal..may hit pedal when range engage..need clutch to take out tranny range..also start up,letting tractor warm up.

Thanks for the replys we have never used the PTO on this tractor. It is just used for the loader and to pull wagons. I just sit down and start it. Tomarrow I'll have to try starting it with the clutch pushed in. I have never changed it out of med. range. Like I said I don't run the equipment very much. Cheers eddy

Eddy, please experiment with the various ranges, particularly LOW.

I ALWAYS use LOW when I'm maneuvering in tight spaces... it allows more precise control and gives you more time to watch tight tolerances and stop/correct because you are going slower. It is my SAFETY FIRST gear.

I use HIGH when traveling down the road or across smooth/level ground where a higher speed is comfortable AND safe to use.

You give me way too much credit as I have probably learned as much from other more knowledgeable TBN members as from experience. I also checked with the people at my Kubota dealership.

I would rather have a clutch & not need it, than need a clutch and not have one. That was the only aspect of my B3030 i did not like, no clutch pedel.
