clutch won't release, was working when I drove it to the shop to fix steering about a month ago.

Get it to a hill and/or push start it in the highest gears possible , run it around for a few minutes WITH the clutch pushed in and then jam on the brakes with the clutch pushed in. She should break free.

Or fasten it to a stout tree with the drawbar and chain and go forward with the clutch pushed in. The will break it as well.

IMHO chaining a tractor with a stuck clutch to a stout tree then starting engine isn't a very good idea. Sounds like a good way for tractor operator to possibly get disabled or killed if clutch plate doesn't become unstuck!! I've seen PP operating bolts break rendering PP inoperable so therefore stuck clutch solution is splitting tractor!

I suggest to block/tie clutch pedal down, start tractor & let engine run until engine reaches operating temp hoping clutch will become unstuck OR get tractor in a wide open area start engine while in gear & the depress(stomp) each brake pedal individually applying shock load to drive train.

I've done that more than once with no detrimental issues. You chain the the drawbar and chain low on the tree. Leave slack in the chain and when it gets to the end of the chain, it breaks (the disc), hopefully not the chain. A blanket on the chain is also a good idea. Just keep the clutch pedal depressed the whole time. Did it on a big Deere and a Massey. Takes a big tree and a stout chain.

That's why (if you bother to read your owners manual) it will plainly state to use either the clutch pedal hook to keep the clutch disengaged when the tractor isn't in use or wedge a block of wood between the pedal and the underside of the dash to keep the pedal depressed. Condensation in the bell housing will cause the clutch plate to rust bond to the flywheel.

BTW,If you care what the neighbors think about you, wait until they are not home, otherwise they might think you are drunk.

My first tractor experience was with a 1940 John Deere L when I was 10-11 years old. The tractor was about 10 years old when Dad bought it, and when not in use, it was parked behind the barn, out in the weather. And at least twice that clutch got stuck that way. That little tractor was a 3 speed forward, one reverse, just like the old cars. So when I started it (hand cranked) in neutral, then I could not get it into gear; just grind the gears. So I learned to crank it in neutral, let it warm up a bit, shut it down, put it in the lowest gear, throttle at an idle, then crank it, jump out of the way as it took off slowly, climb on from the back, then hold the clutch pedal all the way down, pull the throttle wide open and stand on the brakes just as hard as I could. And that would pop the clutch loose.

Now many years later, when I bought a brand new Kubota, it came with a particularly shaped block of wood and I had no idea what it was for, until the dealer told me it was to hold the clutch pedal down when the tractor was parked. I never used it, and never had the clutch stick, but I used the tractor very frequently, and kept it parked inside my shop building.

I had a similar situation with my NH a few years back. Clutch wouldn't disengage, tried all the tricks. None fixed it. Once I split the tractor I saw why. The complete center of the clutch was completely shattered.

Eventually you realize they are the same method...

Hasnt worked yet on our ford 631, but i havent chained it to a tree.

Indeed anything that deliver's a shock might jar the clutch loose but there's no guarantees. I suggest that chaining to a tree isn't a good idea because it might damage the tractor, plus it can be dangerous for the operator.

I'm here to tell you that at 70 years old, I've chained more than one to a tree and broke the clutch loose before and I'm still here but then I farm for a living and I have all my fingers too. Chain to the drawbar with a stout shackle and stout chain to a stout tree, Put a blanket or tarp over the chain in case it breaks. Been there did that too. Still here last time I looked.

I really don't give a hoot if you drive it off a cliff to break the clutch loose, just relaying to people with a stuck clutch how I unstuck them.

That is a non issue anymore. My tractors don't have dry clutches now. All are multi plate wet clutches.

Take truck or another tractor and put stuck tractor in high engine off clutch depressed, have other tractor put tension and it will come loose with any danger

Tying the rear to a tree will cause the tractor to rotate up and over the rear wheels. Make Shure you have your seat belt on and your ROLL OVER BAR IN PLACE and someone standing by ready to call 911.

Amen Buddy. There's no way I'd try that method.

....stop chaining the tree to the top of the ROPS (roll over bars), or to anything else above the rear axle that would cause it to flip, and you'll be good. ;)

pg.3:
"Drawbar leverage:
....When the front end of the tractor lifts, the rear
drawbar of the tractor will lower. This is a function of
tractor geometry. The higher the front end raises, the lower
the rear drawbar is driven. As the drawbar lowers, the
“angle of pull” and the leverage the load has to tip a tractor
rearward is also lowered. By design, a load will always
lose its ability to tip a tractor rearward before the tractor’s
CG reaches the rear stability baseline. As the load loses its
ability to continue to tip the tractor rearward, the front end
falls back to the ground. If the tractor operator doesn’t stop
the pulling action, the entire process will repeat itself,
resulting in a bouncing of the tractor’s front end."
