CO2 starter?

My neighboor has a JD not sure the series. Probably early 80's with a covered cab. Has a radio. He was trying to start it. So I went over and helped him. Checked the battery and connections. Then he said that it might need more CO2 canister replaced. I did not know that they needed this. I know that older plaines sometimes use changes to get started but I have never heard of this? What years needed this?

From the description, not sure what you are referring to here. Ask him for more information.
See if it's ether that he injects to start it (would help to know what he is starting too, like the model number?), as some do that (not good for starting the CUT diesels as I understand).

i have seen add on ether injection cannisters like you describe. just push the button instead of dealing with air cleaner and spray bomb. never saw as oe installed though........

My father had a alternator, starter and generator rebuilding business. Did everything from cars to farm tractors to big trucks. I recall him talking about compressed air starters for truck diesel engines. I have heard a few start. You may have too and not realized it.

John Deere had some compressed air starters they experimented with in the early 60's on their new 4 cyl diesel engines. Worked great if you could keep a tank of air under pressure. They spun pretty fast, and also turned the diesel engine over pretty fast.
They tested the engine and the starters first in a fleet of Taxi cabs in Chicago (my father was the experimental engineer for some of that project). The idea caught on better in the trucking business I think.
Maybe Deere still had some around in the 80's but doubt it.
Besides, the neighbor was checking his connections to the battery for juice, likely for electric start.
Maybe we'll learn some better particulars from farmall guy.
