It depends a lot on where your at in relation to the hill. If your at the base of the hill and the party you want to talk to is on the other side at the base, then your reception will be poor at best. We have been as close as 200-300 yards and reception was poor, ie. broken transmissions. However this is the case for more powerfull radios also. The terrain dictates the signal getting through. Having worked with commercial two way radios in my line of work, they have the same problems but on a different scale. But put a big enough bluff or hill between them and the transmission will not go through. All in all for a cheap unit they do a pretty good job. I hope I have answered your question.

Some fellows here in the St. Louis area were using marine band radios when they were out flying their ultra light aircraft. The Coast Guard complained to the FCC and they were tracked down and had to pay several thousand $ in fines. I'm not sure if the FCC could have confiscated the aircraft also. I don't think so, I think that depends on if the equipment was "installed" or just hand held.

I'm sure you'd hate to lose your tractor because you didn't get a FCC license. You may never get caught, but best to follow the rules, right?
