Re: My brand new TC35D...

Well Jim, almost a year has past and still no problem with the thermostat, UNTIL LAST NIGHT! Went out to plow some snow and the engine never heated up. Fortuneately I had your superior knowledge and experience on my side. I pulled the radiator hose of the top of the engine, looked down into the fitting and there was the thermostat, stuck open. I took out the two bolts holding it on and sure enough, the little ball/plug was stuck under the thermostat, exactly like your picture. I know you or someone posted a later picture of a fix using a wire, but now I'm wondering, what does the dealer propose? Does a new thermostat have a different setup?

Re: My brand new TC35D...

sorry to say ours had the same problem-we opted for the cut-off method after replacing it with a new one. We also wanted to let New Holland buy us a t-stat, they said they would do it again, I said no.It works fine now-

Re: My brand new TC35D...

Duane, I'd do what Grainger did on his (cut off the ball valve) if I had it to do again (and I may in the future). I was afraid that the tiny bit of flow through the hole might cause the engine to stay on the cool side, but enough people have done that successfully that I think I'd change my method and opt for the removal technique.

Also... This last weekend, I was starting my tractor, but it just attempted to start and died. Suddenly, there was no "juice" to the solenoid and it wouldn't attempt to start. From what I've learned here, I took out my dash panel and, sure enough, the 7.5 amp fuse was blown. A quick replacement and the engine started right up. Everything has worked fine since. If I hadn't read so much about that problem here, I'd probably have spent at least one hour troubleshooting and maybe more. This forum has saved me lots of hours and lots of grief. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: My brand new TC35D...

Think I'm gonna try the fix proposed by "bekxsteins" back in January 02. He suggested cutting the plug off and then putting a rivet in the hole to plug the little flow. He's a NH tech and claims the flow makes the engine run 15 - 20 degrees cool. I've heard something like this before on cars so I'm gonna take his word. To provide for the air venting, he suggested in his post to drill a 0.040 hole next to the rivet. I've seen some auto thermostats with a tiny vent, just like he's suggesting, so I'm gonna give it a try. By the way, I contacted my dealer and the service manager says the NH Bulletin on this says to rotate the ball position to the tappet-cover-side of the opening. Apparently NH thinks the flow changes enough over there to keep the ball from lodging in the thermostat. ... I think I have more faith in our fixes.

Re: My brand new TC35D...

I must be getting desperate, as I'm replying to my own notes. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Anyway, I did the fix and all went perfect. Engine heats up in about 10-15 minutes and comes right up to the mid-scale mark. I had to make a few modifications to the fix however. After cutting off the ball/plug, I had to use a drill to enlarge the rivet hole to 1/8 " so I could get a standard 1/8" rivet to fit in. Also, before putting in the rivet, I ground the head of the rivet on two sides to make sure it would not interfere with the thermosat valve seal and also make sure it would be clear of the tractor engine block edges once I placed it back into the recess in the engine head. Lastly, I didn't have a 0.040" drill bit, so I used a 1/16" bit, which is only slightly larger at 0.0625". This seemed to have no effect on the engine warming up, even though it was about 15 degrees out last night when I tried it out. Lastly, when putting the hose fitting back on top of the thermostat, I tossed the gasket and simply used, "Ultra Blue" Permatex make-a-gasket sealer in its place.
