I'm looking to buy a Deere 5410. It has the "collar shift transmission". Practically speaking, when going to shift this tranny, whether moving or at a stop, how does this transmission work, is it a good tranny to have, is it durable? Do I have to come to a stop to change shift range? I read where it is non-synchronized. Is this good or bad?

That said, is the 5410 a good, solid unit?>

You have to stop to shift ranges and being collar shift you need to stop to shift gears. A lot depends on how the tractor was used and how many hours on it. My neighbor has a 5410 with sync-shuttle, it has been a very dependable tractor for him. He has 2,500+ hours on it and is used mostly for moving 4X5 hay bales around. Based on how little adjustment is left in the clutch, I am guessing he has only about 400 hours left on the transmission.

If you want to compare prices look at tractorhouse.com and machinefinder.com

Here is a link to the operators manual on the 5410.

If I was looking for a tractor to handle very many rd bales I wouldn't want a collar shift trans. Traction clutches on JD 5000 series utility tractors have a long history of premature failure

As stated with a collar shift you have to stop for every gear/range change. This gets old fast. Your left knee will also let you know that you were using a collar shift. They are strong and should be trouble free other than the clutch.

I think you would be much more satisfied buying one with a PowrReverser 12F 12R hydraulic shuttle this transmission allows for no clutching between forward and reverse. The range shifts require stopping to change. Gear changes are synchronized so you can shift them while moving using the clutch. Reverse speeds are slightly faster than forward speeds, something I prefer.
