My wife and I operate a small, part-time landscape design business specializing in Japanese style gradens. We own three compact Cub Cadets; two 7230's manual transmission, one 7275 hydro with mfwd. All three machines have been little or no trouble to operate and maintain. Some small wear related items failed early: loader control lever boot ripped, a hood decal peeled, a battery corroded for no apparent reason, and there have been a few paint related problems caused by exposure to the weather. All of these were easily fixed for little cost. I agree about the fit and finish, but on the 1995 7230 only, and even then it was no big deal. The hydro is by far and away the most popular for ease of operation, the newer version is the 7305 and has a 30hp 3 cylinder diesel as opposed to our 27hp 3 cylinder. This amounts to little when you run both machines for anything but mowing, the 30hp has a slight edge having a bit more grunt for the heavy grass. At the time, these machines represented a fine bargain for a new machine, however, the price competition has become ever closer and makes like NH and Kubota have added features and models that best the Cubs. Product lines don't often match feature for feature exactly from one mfg. to another so one maker may have a feature you like but can't be had with another. By and large, the Cubs are great machines and one needn't worry about parts should MTD decide to end the line (and they have no such plans), Mitsubishi, Case, and MTD make good money from parts and would be loath to end such a lucrative business. Cub hasn't done as well in some parts of the country due mainly to the intense brand loyalty that Deere, NH, Case, and Kubota enjoy. The single most critical comment I have concerning MTD is the dealer/service issue. Not every Cub dealer is top flight, there are some that got into the sales with little more than lawn mower experience and are lost when it comes to small diesel repair. This is changing, Cub is improving, and I think in the not too distant future the only thing separating the compacts will be color.
