If GM went with a V6 diesel. It would be the Larger version of the Cruz's four cylinder 2.0L and Canyon's 2.8L Italian VM diesel . Iirc Ram uses the 3.0L VM diesel in the 1/2 ton pickup. 240 to 270HP depending on the emission specs.
Of course the advantages of a 2015 spec diesel in a North America for light duty don't exist . Unless the price of diesel drops to about 2/3 the price of gasoline . Or if the EPA rolls back emissions specs to Tier II.

Apples to apples comparison:

There's a lot of clever technology packed within, not least a triple-charged 4.0-litre engine. That develops 429bhp and 664lb-ft of torque, the latter from only 1,000rpm. And yes, you did read that right: maximum torque at 1,000rpm. 0-62mph takes 4.8secs and top speed is 168mph. It develops as much torque as Bentley's W12 petrol Bentayga and makes it available 350rpm sooner, and although it isn't quite as startlingly rapid on paper (the numbers for the W12 are 4.0secs to 62mph and a 187mph maximum), it makes up for that by being much cleaner (210g/km of CO2 plays 296g/km) and more efficient (35.8mpg on the combined cycle for the diesel, against 21.6mpg). That makes the Bentayga diesel the cleanest, most efficient Bentley ever.

Granted this is state of the art diesel tech, but that is a 65% improvement in mpg.

Clearly, these diesels require further outlawing.

In Europe we have been incentivised one way or another to buy diesels....

Well phenomenal fuel mileage does help.

I was in Spain last week and rented a 2016 Renault Megane 1.5L turbo-diesel. I got 62.3mpg in about 500
miles of driving on the Autopista. The engine was only 15:1 compression, but did not seem under-powered
in this larger wagon (2800# or so). Diesel comes in 2 grades there, and I paid 1.12Euro per liter. Tolls
were punishing.

That's not a truck, I know, but a friend in Barcelona drove us around in his newish Mazda CX-5 2.2L TD,
and it was impressive in terms of passing. Only 40mpg. Wish we could get that here in a 2800# PICKUP.
That engine is only 14:1 compression, but it has sophisticated injector control and turbos.

The Megane is all new in 2016, mid-year. The one I rented was the older model, which
is rated to get 70mpg. The last time I drove in Spain (2009), I rented a very small
Citroen C2 (gasoline), and was happy with the 40+ mpg that I tallied for my whole trip
of more than 1800mi. The Renault was better in every way except that its larger size
made negotiating some narrow streets a bit harder.

Agreed. I saw that episode of TG, and it was quite funny.

A small 2-door PU with the Mazda 2.2 twin turbo-diesel (about 180hp or so) would be
the bee's knees. Even the new Toy Taco is huge, and no Hi-Lux.
