Compacting gravel driveway

   / Compacting gravel driveway #121
Got 5 loads @15 yards 2A modified (1.5"and smaller) delivered and tailgated. I leveled it with blade and build a crown. Than run again with box blade. Waiting for a drizzle/rain to get guy with vibrating roller to pack it. Stone is too dry right now to compact it.
Glad to hear an update.

You’re basically wasting time compacting clean stone. The roller will smooth it out and make it look better but it will roll around again as soon as you drive on it. The stone dust or crusher run is the only way to make it lock together.
Very true.

I pack my own 3/8"- 1/2" crushed driveway every few years only because I can but it's a waste of time.

The only time I gained was when I accidentally packed it wet. Five years later I can still see where it got packed and it looks like the same small gravel pushed down into the fines. New gravel still slides on top. I have a great base underneath and a guy in a slow moving dump spreads an inch or so every 5 years.

My drive looks good because I don't drive down the center every time. I drive with one wheel on one edge one time and the other side next time. I mix it up and drive slowly.
Visitors may drive down the center but I have found it takes the pressure off developing center tire tracks. My driveway is flat, slight crown, minimal gravel and no holes or anything after 25 years.

I drive 5 ton and 10 ton+ equipment--off center- on a regular basis in dry weather. I keep a minimal surface amount of gravel and no sharp turns or high speed. No thick amounts of gravel to push off or cause problems.

In pics below there are some rarely seen tracks because my elderly neighbor floors it. The lines in the other photo is where the hose was driven over for a month. All ok if infrequent and dry.
