Compatibility?

I'm about due for the 50 hour service on my DX29. I was in the NAPA store the other day and asked about filters. The woman finally found the listing among their many books, and gave me Farm Bureau discount prices. While looking through things for the listings, I had suggested looking for the TC29 since the tractors are supposed to mechanically the same. According to the NAPA books, at least one filter is different.

I checked prices against Messick's and NAPA is about 10% lower after the discount but higher before it.

Now to my question, finally. Could I buy the NH filters from Messick's and have all of them fit the DX29? I just figured they should be the same and was surprized to find they were listed differently.

While you're thinking that one over, does anyone have anything strongly against NAPA filters? I know you just have to trust the manufacturer on things since you can't really compare the insides, but NAPA has a pretty good reputation for parts. Opinions are welcome as well as experiences, both good and bad.

Messicks does duch a good job and their filters are NH. I am very frugal, but saving 10% is not worth it when it comes to a very "expensive" machine. I now buy from Messicks. I know the specs are spot on, the filters fit and most importantly, I never have to worry if the filter is the right filter. Peace of mind is worth the extra 10%.

I'm like Doc Bob; if there's any question at all, I go with the OEM parts. But of course I've used lots of NAPA stuff and have never had a complaint so I pretty well trust their stuff. So I wouldn't really hesitate to go either way on this one.

I haven't priced filters at my dealer yet, but thought you guys all thought so much of Messick, and they advertise here and support this board, that I would see what their prices were like. The different number thing still has me puzzled, though.

I've heard people swear by one brand of filters while another person swears at them. That's why I wondered about the NAPA brand.

I've bought different numbers at my dealer even. I go in and ask for xyz filter for a TC18 and get one of 2 or 3 different numbers for one of them.

Oh. That's kind of odd, but I suppose there's no point in wondering why it happens that way. On the other hand, on my Kubota there were some parts that were subject to a running change except the new part number oil filter didn't fit the old tractor. The dealer knew it, and I found out that the factory information was incorrect. The threads were right, but the gasket and mating surfaces didn't line up. I was lucky enough to find a case of the old part number and bought them all.

I use NAPA filters on my machines. The NAPA gold filters are made by WIX and will meet or exceed all the OEM parts. All the farmers around here use them on thier big stuff. If it okay for them it is okay for me. Plus the NAPA store is down the street and the JD dealer is 40 miles away.

Farmers with "real" tractors have to keep to a very rigorus maintenance schedule that requires them to use the OEM filters and send in fluid samples for analysis. If they don't the warrenty on the machine is not as long.

Havin' a mid 70's grey market tractor, makes NAPA the first place to look, If they don't have it, they order it. I find it's best to know the Wix numbers when you walk in the door. ;-)
