I am against mixing types. In another industry, aviation, back in the late 70's there was a failure of grease when two non-compatible greases were mixed and lost all structure that made it grease. Lost an aircraft as a result.

I know this is a tractor not an airplane but the possibility of loss of properties due to non compatible fluids is the same. :thumbdown:

I'm not as sure that it's the same thing at all. Greases seem to have a much more complicated and varied chemistry than oils, so it wouldn't surprise me that some greases are incompatibie. That doesn't worry me much because grease applications on tractors are all high load/low velocity joints. So I'm betting that even if grease weirdnessy does happen it's more likely to be a curiosity than a problem in a tractor.

I agree with Silvic on his reluctance to mix fluids. Shucks, I prefer not to mix oils myself. But back to the original question about oils, I've never found evidence of any incompatibility between trans/hydraulic oils that meet the same basic
specs.
In fact, now that I think more on it, after more than a half century of doing mechanics I've not seen evidence of incompatibility between any oils that come out of an engine, hydraulics, or tranny.

Barring water of course. Water and oil really are incompatible. What you get when the two are mixed is an unmistakeable emulsion that doesn't act like either one.

you still have to watch grease bases, simply pump all the old grease out if you switch.

HYD fluids are made, for the most part to NOT cause problems when topped. and again.. tractors rarely crash on take off, landing or experience engine failures in flight..

I know this is a tractor not an airplane but the possibility of loss of properties due to non compatible fluids is the same. Of course you are talking to someone that when he changes the hyd fluid in his machines he changes the remnants of the fluid that is in the attachments by flushing them as well. It took a bit over 33 percent more fluid to do that but that would have been 33% dirty fluid that would have circulated if it had not been done.

the one oil type I don't mess around ANY with is brake fluid... regular or silicone or otherwise....
