Compressor tank check

Is there anyway to check if a compressor tank is rusting out and is unsafe, if it was rusting out would it just pop a hole in it or would it blow like a bomb.
I have a couple of old compressors and started wondering about this.

I have a portable compressor ( 2 HP. 20 gallon tank 120 PSI) When the tank rusted out . It was just a small hole. You could hear the air excape from the hole . But, it didn't explode. I welded up the hole & it has been doing great for 3 years now

Yes you can test compressor tanks. Take the tank to any reputable compressor repair shop and they can ultra sound test it for you. If it's to big to move they can come out and do a onsite inspection on it. I had my tanks tested about a year and a half ago and cost me $40 each to get my two 120 gallon tanks checked. I saved a bunch because I was in no hurry and just told them to schedule me in when they were doing someone else close by.
