Compressor

Decided to go to the garage and look..... mine is a pressure lubricated unit with an oil filter, rather than the splash lubed ones that they are now making. I believe that even Quincy has entered the field of cheaper air compressors to be able to compete for the lucrative homeowner market. I will post two pictures..... this is a side view....

In this picture, you can see the optional copper lines that I have added so the compressor will go to an idle, without the compressor spinning, but the motor continues to run. When the pressure drops to a certain point, then the compressor will then start pumping. This is a modification that you can order from the factory, or add yourself. Mine didn't have it when it arrived, so I added it. Great when you are using a lot of air. The thing to look for with the Quincy compressors is the pressure lubrication if you want them to last.

Junkman,
All compressors possible to find here are splash lubricated.
I never see something like this here. Pump looks very robust.
How many CFM @ rpm it has, psi, gal, HP, single or double stage... Motol looks like single phase

I'm very curious man /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ZJ,

I have a compressor very similar to the one you are looking at getting. Mine is a single-stage Coleman BlackMax, 5 HP, around a 30 gallon tank, probably around 120 psi max. Splash lube, horizontal tank.

I've had it for over 10 years. I don't use it daily, sometimes not even weekly - but I have used it intensively at different points in time. I run a variety of air tools, including a siphon sandblaster (which will make it run continously if you have very much to blast)

Mine has held up very well - the only thing I've done with it is change the oil regularly.

Thanks guys. I thought it was something along those lines but I didn't know ... now I do.

At TSC you can get a farm hand.. or a CH compressor .. 60 gal.. 5hp upright in the 400$ range. Harbor freight sometimes has IR units but generally has their brand CP.. also in the 400$ range.

We have one of the tsc/CH brands at work, married to a 60 gal tank from a compressor we had that lost it's pump.

It runs big 1" air ratchets.. spray paint.. our plasma cutter.. etc.

Wow! That looks huge- is it really a 5hp, or a 25 hp as illustrated in the 1st picture?

Compressor 101

The above is a great basic discussion on air compressors

Mine is a true 5 HP electric motor..... not one that is about 2 HP, but some engineer has some fancy way of figuring out how to call it a 5 HP by doing some fancy footwork. I looked up the motor number once to get a price for the motor for another compressor that I was considering. It was like mine, but had two compressor heads mounted with 2 3 phase motors. I figured that I would just replace the motors and then sell mine. The motor alone, with the best discount that I could find was just a hair over $400 buying 2 of them. I gave up on the though of buying that compressor since the motor cost put it out of practical range. It was the only one like it that I had ever seen and it was a factory built unit. I doubt that you could have run that unit out of air no matter how hard you tried. The way it worked, is that one motor / compressor would come on and if that one didn't bring the tank up to specifications soon enough, then the other one would kick on and give it assistance. Would have been great for doing sand blasting...
