Computer boot up time?

There are many variables that determine how long it takes to boot.

Hardware, boot time settings, software that is set to run all play into how quickly one comes up. Western put together an awesome machine with SSD drive and a gaggle of memory which gives him a fast boot up.

Some AV's will want to scan the drive if you are booting up from a power off situation which can make you think your computer is very slow.

I have a laptop that has been on for several years. It goes to sleep when I leave it and I reboot on occasion. I probably need to dust out the fans though.

Get your desktop up off the floor 5 or 6 inches and it won't pull in quite as much dust. A UPS is a great system saver for non-laptop machines.

Which ones that you know of that are designed to do so ?

We use Lenovo's at work. They sent out a note a few years ago to NOT leave them on for 24 hours. They were not model specific though, which I would think would be important. At the time most people would have had a T60P or T61P model.

I was surprised that people were running them 24 hours since we have to lock up the systems in furniture overnight. I wonder if the systems were overheating because people would lock up the systems in a drawer and leave them on.

Desktops I leave on 24x7. I have an old IBM desktop that has to be 10-12 years old that has been powered on for most of that time. My HP system is the same way, just not as old, maybe 4-5 years.

I think my next system will be home built. I am going to start looking for parts, especially power supplies and cases then wait until they go on sale and buy them. Some of the newer cases can have quite a few fans and more importantly cleanable filters.

Also do not place the desktop up against the wall or the side of furniture so that the air vents on the case are blocked.

Now a days we have quite a few UPSes for the PC's and TV. Yes the TV.

I used a power strip to keep the PC from being pushed up against the desk. This keeps the air vents from being blocked.

If one has dog(s) the dust problem is even worse.

My 2002 home built has 9 fans in it which really makes it a little noisy to have close by. Last year 2 of the fans quit working but were easily replaced for $2 each. It has a cleanable/replaceable filter behind the snap-off front panel that catches a lot of dust but keeps the insides immaculately clean.

NINE FANS....!!!!??? Is it so seriously overclocked there is that much heat to remove from the case? My Dell 530 has only the stock CPU cooler, plus the fan on the power supply. It is elevated about 7 inches about the floor and has good circulation on all sides and never seems to run hot.

I have found it fine to leave them on, if you don't mind the 1-5W they consume in S3/Sleep state.

My experience is that Windows based PC's may be fine with being left on for long periods of time. Windows still gets constipated and needs reboots here and there. I have seen Sun/Unix systems that were left on for a couple two or three years, and never required a reboot.

I like to build my own PC's I'm about ready for an upgrade. I have been contracting in a group that does energy star testing, thermal testing, and acoustic test. So get to play with a lot of hardware.

Some newer MB's have really low S3/Sleep state to meet US EPA Energy Star regs, but also to meet stricter regs for European standards. Match those boards up with an 80%+ PS(Bronze or better) for really good Sleep/Off numbers. Remember, most people turn the PC off using software; the PS is still active in 5V standby to sense when you push the power button on the PC, so will still use power...

Not much in electronics really turns "off" these days; it is more a standby mode.

Filters is one of the reasons I bought the case I have, it is amazing how much "stuff" is in the air.

I think this is the order of electric consumption which will vary some depending on the Operating System your running. Most to least

Sleep, Hybrid sleep, Hibernate.

How long does it take your computer to boot up and be ready to go online? I am talking about a complete start from the time you turn it on, log in using a password, and it is ready to connect to the Internet. I have a pair of 3 year old Toshiba laptops, both running Vista 32 bit, with all bloatware removed, and although they use a different processor, I can connect to DSL in 2:45 with one, and 3:15 with the second. Someone on another forum is bragging that his Dell will boot up in 40 seconds, and I want to tell him he is full of horse pooh. He claims his computer is not in hibernate or sleep mode, but will boot up from off in 40 seconds.

i'm gonna go check my netbook.

I'll check with ethernet cable, and broadband and wifi and post back.
