I've used 19" to 21" monitors all my CADD life (24+ years), so I used 20" monitors at home. When my trusty 20" Viewsonic CRT puked after 12-years, I decided to splurge big time and get a 30" wide screen LCD from Dell. I love having the screen real estate for my various graphics programs, which require toolbars out the wazoo to work, and it was getting to the point that my drawing area was shrinking with all the new "features" with each software upgrade.
Reading manuals in PDF format on screen is a pleasure now too.
I've done the 2-monitors bit before; but found it to be such a hassle to get it to work properly.
The only downsides to my LCD is that I had to get a new video card for my 3+ year old PC, and Dell sells the speaker bar separately for $30. For what I paid for the monitor, the speakers should come standard. The speaker bar doesn't sound as rich as my subwoofer-satellite speakers do; but for what I do they are fine and my hearing isn't as sharp as it used to be anyway.
Bottom line; I won't go back to a CRT.
