Friends bought their son a new laptop from Best Buy last fall. Of course it had Win 8; Best Buy had already quit selling machines with Win 7 on them. It was not touch screen, so he couldn't make it work for him at all. Best Buy wound up taking it back, and they ordered a laptop from Dell with Win 7. Problems solved.

I managed to avoid Vista, and will avoid Win 8 as well. When Win 9 comes it it may be described similary to Win 7 - as what should have been the latest service pack for the previous version.

This free open source program will recreate the Start Button on the Desktop. It has the various shutdown options like Windows 7. It may solve your shutdown problems. Even if it doesn't, it will make life sooo much easier.

Thanks. I read up on Classic Shell back awhile but I wanted to keep everything to the minimum with very few programs added until I could get this W8 installed, updated, running, and stable. I've had to reinstall W8 3 times so far.

Now might be a good time to do some modifications.

Mentioned it in an earlier post to use a registy hack. This is the simplest way to cure the PIA Windows 8 tiles B.S. until someone puts out a free script utility that will accomplish this in one click.

Reg hacks are simple, print the instructions out, double check each step.

Just saw this on the Financial Times. Microsoft prepares rethink on Windows 8 flagship software - FT.com

Microsoft is preparing to reverse course over key elements of its Windows 8 operating system, marking one of the most prominent admissions of failure for a new mass-market consumer product since Coca-Colaç—´ New Coke fiasco nearly 30 years ago.

ey aspects of how the software is used will be changed when Microsoft releases an updated version of the operating system this year, Tami Reller, head of marketing and finance for the Windows business, said in an interview with the Financial Times. Referring to difficulties many users have had with mastering the software, she added: 典he learning curve is definitely real.?br>

No mention on when this will happen and what they will change but it is a step in the right direction.

I tried what was described in the link:
Launch the registry editor (win+r > regedit >enter)
Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Double-click on RPEnabled
Change the value from 1 to (zero)
Tap enter or click OK

I don't see RPEnabled in my version Win 8 and I searched too. The link was from 2011 and it looks like this worked in early versions of Win 8. I figured that lurking in Win 8 there is a Win 7 user interface and it is only a question of how to get it enabled...

Try Google searching on the issue, most of the sites I found are not accessable from my work computer but I'm sure there are other sites with a different hack to preform.
