Computer question --how to get rid of Kitro Worm

at this point there is no start menu. it won't boot.

Have you tried to reload your system restore disc ? There may be an easier way but Soundguys answer was a good one but it looks like your up poopie creek without paddle.
You put a scare in me and I did a search on that name and nothing come up ( very happy smiley face goes here )

Sounds like your hard drive died. Viruses, especially Kitro, don't want to kill the host, they want to exploit it. Kitro sends spam to people on your email address list.
Get Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a free Linux distribution. It's easy to use all you have to do is create the CD. You can google a source. Once you make a boot CD, boot your computer. If Ubuntu cannot deal the drive then it is dead of natural causes. Chances are Ubuntu will be able to see your files. Are ther any files that you do not want to loose. You windows viruses will not be able to attack Linux because they do not know how to.

Mr Jimi's idea about using the restore CD is good. You may be able to "repair" windows and or the hard drive as necessary. Although, the chances are that any viruses present will rise again. Reinstalling windows will reformat the drive and eliminate all viruses and files.

I did both the repair (didn't repair it) and the reinstall (that killed it completely). Before, when I could boot off the CD, I could get to a DOS mode and see the files on the C: drive. I even ran chkdsk in the DOS mode.

But when I ran the reinstall, now the only message I get is 'a disk read error occurred' and I can't even open the CD drive to get the disk out.

Oh well. All good things must bite the dust. I may go with Linux the next go-around.

As an aside, probably most of this damage was self induced but I would not have self induced any of it had I not been trying to deal with the vandalism of my computer in the first place.

I do not understand this mentality. What kind of person gets pleasure out of causing grief to someone he will never even meet or even know that that person was inconvenienced by his actions? It is not like the satisfaction one might get from the egging of a loathesome person's car...that's first-order instant gratification. But to screw up someone's computer in Poughkeepsie? What fun is that?

I do know that if I were to make the aquaintance of the person responsible for the Kitro Worm, I would be more than happy to relieve him of any future offspring....with a very dull and rusty knife.

There is a small hole in the front of the CD drive. Straighten out a paper clip and put it in the hole. When you feel the bottom of the hole poke the clip in gently but firmly. That will manually eject the CD.
Sounds like your hard drive has gone to the great bit bucket in the sky. When you power on do you hear a drumming noise after the disk spins up?
I have used Ubuntu Linux for email, chat and surfing. It's a great alternative.

A lot of todays viruses are money makers. They send out spam for customers. Some virus makers get paid for each machine they infect or by the volume of spam they send. Take heart, although some people are getting rich, some are going to jail.
