I may have missed it, but I don''t understand why if the HD and CD Drive are good, then you can't just do a complete windows reinstall with a format. You may need a second HD to install on and then you could save your data.

(Or use one of the backups that of course you have ;). My pc's backup every night to a server and I can roll them back a day or a month till they last worked well :p thanks to Windows Home Server)

Well, I've wasted another perfectly good day messing with computer problems and still am not finished.

I did manage to download and run Ubuntu on another computer though I've not yet figured out it's equivalent of Explorer. On that computer I booted it up on Ubuntu running off the CD drive but never did get it to look at the files on the computer's c: drive. I think once I figure that out, I'm on the home stretch.

I will have to put a hard drive back in the dead computer, though, as I yanked them out in anticipation of installing the new, untainted hard drive I've yet to buy. The cheapskate in me thinks that if I can get Ubuntu to run off the CD, AND see the files on the dead drive, I won't have to buy the new drive at all.

Once this is over, I am going to think long and hard about stepping off the PC/Windows Merry Go Round. Methinks I've enjoyed about as much as I can stand.

The beauty of running off CD is that it won't get corrupted. It is slower though if thats a factor. Instead of explorer I use Firefox. It's a good browser for both Linux and Windows. If you need to cross reference applications I know a few that cover the basics very well.

Praise be, to Allah, Jehovah, or Ferlin Husky, take your pick. It's up and running on Ubuntu on the CD and it can see the files on the hard drive. They all look to be OK so I will get busy moving/saving them tomorrow.

But the grudge against Windows et al remains. I am not over my mad spell against them yet.

If you are going to run any Linux distribution, I strongly suggest getting a good Linux book. Linux is a whole different ballgame, and there are some basics you will need to learn to administer your system. Since you are leaning toward Ubuntu, try and find something written for that distribution.

Linux is in a constant state of change. Try and get a book published in the last year, if at all possible.

Hi Snowridge
You are right about Linux and administration. That's why I have shied away from distributions such as Redhat. I don't want system programming to be my hobby. On the other hand Ubuntu on CD is turnkey, except where wireless cards are concerned. Once you become familiar with the layout you are set. It does the job for surfing and email and it won't get corrupted. If it does gets out of date, burn a newer CD and get back online.

Are you booting from the CD every time, or did you install from the CD?

I have a CD that has a bootable copy of Linux on it that needs no installation and will do its best to copy anything from a dying HD over the network to another PC.

I have used it before to rescue data from a dying HD. I can't remember its name right now though.
