So, Buck, when the dust settles it looks like we're actually in violent agreement. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

If we had made the distinction between professional/industrial/commercial use and everyday home use, we probably would have gotten here sooner.

Top of the line Mac notebook costs $3,200. I got next notch down at $2,900. Top of the line IBM ThinkPad, the only brand I would buy, is $3600.... Add Apple Airport wireless hub for $285, so all computers in house can share same cable modem..... Add MS Office bloatware and minimalist other utilities and applications--of which IBM ViaVoice for Mac OSX is superb--and you're close to $4K..... Add reconditioned HP G85 $499 multifunction color injet bought for $349.... Add $94 ethernet/localtalk adapter box (since new Mac can't communicate with old laser--another scam, new devices cant even talk to old ones that are perfectly good). .... Add optical mouse and some other minor accessories. Over 4K easy. .... All items were purchased at the best available prices anyhwhere. Even got the $450 Office bloat for $199 at Apple Education Store, using my son's student status. Just did same today for Office XP 2002 for $150 with his student ID. .... I'll say one good thing about MS: they have education prices on some of their software......Why am I buying PC Office when I just bought Mac Office? Because the Mac Powerpoint cant open the PC Powerpoint presentations I need for my practice, and my old firm offered to give me my old ThinkPad-- right after I fork out all this dough for Mac..... Now I need an external CD burner to back up the Mac and IBM notebooks: $250 at least for a good one.....Took out a so-called Apple loan to pay pay for it all: no payments for 6 months and 4 years to pay after that. Not a bad deal. The theory is I'll have some money in 6 months, and have actually just convinced a new client to pay for half my computer expenditures.....Desktops are much cheaper than laptops if you get a CRT. However, desktops and CRT's are dinosaurs in my book. I'm willing to pay a premium for a quality brand, light weight, and portability. And, boy, did I. Then you find out it's slow, and it cant even do carriage returns on Apple-nonoptimized TBN..... However, Apples are aesthetic and cool. Titanium Powrbook with glowing Apple on the back... Oh, I forgot, had to buy a new $100 leather briefcase on closeout at Staples, etc, etc.... New Nokia cell phone with infra red communication ability to uplink the Powerbook, so I can log on to TBN in while floating in the Oozama Ver Boten.

Glennmac,
The 1st program I ever wrote was in MAD ( Michigan Algorithm Decoder) back in the 60s at Md. U.
Later used to program on Univac mainframes and the joke went like this:
Did you hear about the rich kid that wanted a Mickey Mouse outfit for Christmas?
His parents bought him Univac!

Glenn,

You have defined "how grown men can cry..." /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

...and it's still sad when that $799. Dell 1GB Desktop brand spanky new Closeout with 17" monitor and software out performs all of "yours above"...

I'd confine myself to a PC when getting on TBN and use the Mac notebook for all else to resolve most of your difficulties...

Harv,

Yeah, I guess we are. I learned all about this kind of aggrement from my Italian wife.

After 20 years, I think I'm getting the hang of it now.

a dual 1GHz box with 1GB of RDRAM and the calculations take 10-20 hours to complete.

What're you doing? Trying to balance Enron's books?

No, didn't you hear...Enron brought in Industrial Size Shredders to balance their books! <g>

Actually I'm modeling some fluid dynamics and crystallization problems for a fiber spinning process. I'm afraid it's not very exciting but definitely challenging.

Glenn -

Sounds like you actually did some pretty good shopping. You should have excellent bang for the buck, so I hope your performance problems get resolved soon. OS X is a radical departure for the Mac line and remains controversial. I keep hoping Apple will get back to the basics that endeared me to them in the first place.

new devices cant even talk to old ones

Another disappointment fer sure. Back when I was a certified Apple developer, backwards compatibility was a requirement for both their hardware and software. There have been a lot of changes at the helm at Apple, which unfortunately has resulted in a lot of changes in their philosophies. I still have faith that they'll get back on track, but then again, I still believe in Santa Claus.

I've been saying the same thing ... for about two years now. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Ahhh... Good old assembly language. Now you are bringing back some memories. As a relative newcomer to the programming game I cut my teeth on assembly language programming for the old Intel 8051 and 8086 microcontrollers. You are right that nothing runs as fast or clean as a properly coded assembly language program. I still spend most of my time writing software at work, although I now write in a graphical programming language called LabVIEW. It is far from efficient performance wise, but it cuts my software development time by at least 50%. I would not even want to think about trying to program any of my current software in assembly language. I can only look at so many MOV A,R1 commands in a day before my eyes go all blurry. Ain't technology grand?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

John, there's no doubt you can get good prices on desktops. My son just got a Compaq. I need a notebook for my job and wanted back into Apple...............You do get built-in entertainment utilities on a Mac not available elsewhere: iTunes, iDVD and iPhoto. Apple is trying to position its cpu's as the hubs of choice for music, movies, and digital photo gimmickry. The new iPhoto is getting great reviews. I am anticipating being able to avoid the expense of Photoshop when I get my non-Nikon 5000 camera.

...Spent almost $4000 on "state of the art" hardware and software...

That's what I spent in 1982 on a 16k PC, 8088 processor, with a single sided 160K floppy drive & dot matrix printer. The Hayes 300 baud modem was an additional $400.

And Quattro Pro now loads slower than Visicalc -- and WordPerfect is slower, and I still have no use for games.
