If I was in the market now and had the dough, I would love one from either of these companies:

Frank, you might also look at the following website. Several people from my work have had great luck buying systems from them

JOHN: thanks for the info, but i like dealing with the smaller guys in the area i know i could get a comprable system for a few $$$$ less from Dell or others. both units come with new cd drive 56x and a 48x24x48 rw drive. some of the smaller things i liked, were 5 cooling fans, 2 on power supply, 1 on cpu, and 2 case fans. also the more expensive unit carry full 3year warrenty parts and labor,= he will make sure my current printer works, and my zip drive. he will deliver it personally, and set it up and make sure all works .+ free phone support, and when u call u get him personally. these little things mean a lot to me.

Something that I don't think has been mentioned (and reading your last post, you may not be interested in anyway) is since there is no "rush" to get a new PC, you could always build your own.

Yea, you can get some good package deals out there, but building a PC isn't that difficult and you can learn a lot along the way in addition to saving money (assuming you pick your components carefully.)

Again, you may not be interested in going this route, but just thought I'd mention it.

this is the part i had a problem with in building my own system, not sure what would work best with what . best left to the more knoweldgable.

Frank-

I was actually thinking about saving money when "carefully" picking components instead of compatibility. Granted, there are some things out there that just don't work together, but most things are designed in such a way to "play well" with others.

I've built a few systems, and when something didn't work (for compatibility or just plain broken) I just took it back. Got a bum motherboard once and a bad CD writer, but really, for the most part, it has been plug it in, install the drivers, and watch it go.

Don't get me wrong, building a system can take a lot of time and generate frustration (my bad motherboard was a REAL pain), but overall, I haven't had bad luck with the cheap-o/generic versions of products. When it comes to computer parts, I guess I'm just really a cheap guy.

Again, I understand if you don't want to mess with it. Kindof like R/C airplanes - some folks like to build 'em, some like to fly 'em, and some like to do both. (I guess I fit in that 3rd category. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif)

I think you want to stay w/ the 533 fsb. This will allow you to drop a faster processor in later, assuming the motherboard supports the new Hyper-Threading Technology. Seems like you got quite a bit for less than $400 including in house setup and support. I wish more people would get support w/ their PCs and use it instead of calling me all of the time /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif. The better video and non-integrated sound card would be worth it to me. Every since I had a problem w/ integrated stuff not being upgradeable but yet they wouldn't disable either (even though they were suppose to be to be disabled) I've stayed away from integrated. That is just my opinion though.

JIM: 99% SURE I AM GOING WITH THE BETTER MACHINE. 533 fsb, 2.5 ghz cpu + the soundblaster card, i told him i want the intergreted sound disabled( have heard of problems when trying to rum them togeter) i think i will drop the new monitor as it is the same size as my current one 17 in, only would be flat screen crt. am sure i can jump to 19 in flat screen for the same price when they are on sale at comp. usa etc. not sure if i want to go to lcd. NOT FAMILAR WITH THE TERM hyper- threading i think he did mention that the better mother board and processer makes the processor work like two cpus is that what u are taliking about or did i get that totally screwed up?/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

A few months ago I checked into doing this, more for the experience than to save money. I went to the Gateway site and configured the PC I wanted. I then attempted to source all the parts I needed to build something similar, e.g., case, power supply, etc. I wasn't too far into the process before I had exceeded Gateway's price. I wasn't using big name parts either. I didn't even mind paying as much as Gateway's price just to get the experience for building my own PC, but I wasn't going to pay more. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
