I was thinking about it for few days - the Virginia Tech shooting and all the opinions posted here. I am going to get CC permit, I think it is he right thing to do.

I am on my second renewal with a PA CC permit and I think in all that time I may have carried ten times. I had a Ruger .357 that was too heavy and then I got a .40 Smith & Wesson Tacticle that I have yet to carry. I need to get into the habit because it isn't doing me any good setting at home.

Overseas, fresh from college, I had a second job guarding money transports carrying my own Taurus .357, it was heave to have it on you all night long. But Ruger .357 is my next revolver I will be buying.

I've been seriously investigating concealed weapons lately... after a lot of study, I've kinda settled on the following:

I want to carry in my hip pocket.. if I don't have it with me, it's no good.
I'll use a holster to avoid printing
I want a 9mm, obviously a killer, per Virginia Tech, cheaper ammunition
I want a laser sight device, improves aim in stress situations
I want an automatic, they are thinner than revolvers
I want a 5 lb or so trigger pull, but this seems to be hard to find
I don't want to spend over $600 all totaled

currently, the best set of tradeoffs seems to be the following package

kel-tec PF9 pistol, it's new, some reliability issues, am waiting for them fixed
Arma Laser sight, they don't yet have a holster for PF9, hope it's in works.

$589 approximate total without dickering, PF9 parkerized = $377, SIGHT = $160, holster maybe = $50, plus tax, license, shipping, etc.

I know this is a personal opinion..yours will very likely vary

This might even be handy on the ranch!

Look for a used Kahr MK9. A very solid little pistol!
They're too heavy (IMHO) for front pocket carry, but do work for hip pocket carry (but I don't care for hip pocket carry). Kahr even sells a nice holster for hip pocket carry, BTW. I've got one, but don't use it.
As far as adding a laser...I think Crimson Trace makes one for the MK9.

I carry the PM40 in a front pocket. No problems, but it's lighter than the MK9.

I might suggest the following book.
Virginia Gun Owners Guide. By Alan Korwin.
I think they or others write a guide for every state so substitute accordingly.

Plain English explanation of VA. CCW gun laws. After reading this it scared me enough to not get my CCW until I take some more classes and range training.
My LEFT wing friend (I use this term loosely) says if I ever shoot someone in self defense, the authorities better go over every detail of the altercation to make sure it was justified and he will see to this personally. He actually had a sign that said "Stricter Guns Laws Now" and stood on the road side Mon. night near a VT victim's visitation. He wouldn't tell me exactly which corner nor whether he held the sign or put it on a poll.
Be careful and get training, because is something happens there will be people lined up on both sides of the issue.
