Would it be possible to puild a concrete pump hat ran off a trotors 540 RPM PTO?

What would be used for the pump?

Start with a search for concrete or grout pumps. Several are available in the hp range of a tractor/truck pto. Building one would require substantial resources but possible. MikeD74T

Moyno, Inc.

These folks make progressive cavity pumps for pumping semi solids such as concrete. I think you would wise to consult the pump manufactures for pump curve charts, figuring horse power, RPM, pump head and viscosity variables.

A good chemical engineere can advise you as well.

Every concrete pump I have seen is a piston pump driven hydraulically
there is usually 2 pistons single acting with a "valve" that moves back and forth to change the piston from charge to discharge.

A progressive cavity pump would shred it self to death in short order.

Even the piston pumps have high wear issues on them.

How far do you have to move the concrete?
We have trucks available here with conveyor belts that go 40 or 50 ft from the cement truck.

I'll need to move concrete 40' or so in a crawl space under a house and then up to fill blocks. It's a small one time project.

I wonder it a small post auger bit in a pipe could push concrete with 1/4" or 3/8" pea gravel up a 3" hose? I could use an old spin spreader as a hopper to feed the auger.

Tell us more : What size (hp) tractor are you planning to use?? How far are you planning to pump the concrete?? How often are you going to use this unit?? Will you be using this for home/farm/contracting?? Have you used a concrete pump before??

My tractor is a IH 424 about 38 PTO HP.

I've never used a concrete pump before, but I've watched them being used.

After having had quite a few concrete jobs done around here lately, I'd say hire a guy with a pumper. Unless you have a lot of jobs you'll be using it on. With all the construction guys looking for work it might be less than you think.

I'll second that... If one just needed to get the concrete into the crawl space of a vacant house, I once saw it delivered with the shoot thru the 1st floor window.. Holes were cut in the floor in several spots and the concrete was wheeled there and dumped...

Depending on what the details are, sometimes it's better to knock a block out of the wall to get the chute in in a couple places. I just used buckets and a helper for mine, and made a strong mix with pea-gravel so that 1" would be thick enough.

I was a concrete contractor... Rent a service, trust me. If there is no spec mix then use peagravel mix with 3 inch system on the pump...easy to move around under the crawlspace. Probably a trailer style. Should cost around 400 for the whole job, maybe less.

I've been around concrete most of my life. I have to agree with arsenix2001. Hire it out to a small contractor. If they don't already have the small pump they will have the resoarces to get one. They would be in and out quickly. It would be cheaper than building a unit that may or may not work in the time you need.

Like nuffer460 said the contractors know the tricks like priming the pump with a concrete (no stone) slurry and have the pigs if needed to wipe the pipe.

All tricks of the trade that I've notice in my life time and many more I've missed.

here is a picture of the basic hydraulic concrete pump,

I realize it is much simplified,

This is an old post, but I just happened upon it. This is a subject that I have become quite interested in, recently as the cost of moving concrete has become overly expensive. This seems to throw in a challenge with some tantalizing prospects.
I was thinking of a couple of cylinder/pistons powered by two way hydraulic cylinders which would be powered by solenoid valves that would be controlled by some kind of relay timing device such as PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) which is a computer that comes in various sizes … specifically for controlling things like solenoids .. Some of these can be had with little expense. What I am trying to describe is a kind of digital crankshaft with hydraulic power.
My concern is how I would introduce concrete into the cylinder without binding its port with an errant piece of aggregate.

a 2 part , drop a smaller load , into a larger lower unit , thru "ports" as in a 2 stroke engine ... ( tapered edges and a rounded dome piston )

It's a small one time project.

Sounds like renting one is a "no brainer" for this project...

good luck...

--Domed piston, plus an opening, like the port of a two cycle engine, and with the port’s edge that tapers out – yes! The piston wall could be elongated to seal off the cylinder chamber from the hopper during the compression stroke. I need to do some figuring with a given length of stroke from the hydraulic cylinder to see if I can do that.
On the delivery side of the cylinder, a flap valve can be made to keep the concrete from sucking back into the cylinder when the piston retracts.
