One cubic yard is 3ft.x 3ft. x3ft. = 27 cubic ft.
To calculate cubic yards: [length x width x depth]/ [ 27 ] = cubic yards.
The measurements must all be in feet.

To convert inches to feet it is [ inches ] / [ 12 ] = feet.

not difficult if approached this way.

I too have always been told to figure eighty square feet per yard.

I've got a bud who runs a bunch of sand and gravel trucks. He told me one time to figure a ten yard load of rock will cover five hundred square feet when figuring a drive. Another quicky old guesstimator thingy for those needing same.

If you're going to do any more construction, make your life easy and go to Lowes or Walmart and get a "ProjectCalc" for $15 - $20. It will calculate concrete yardage, do arithmetic in feet and inches including fractions of an inch, and much more.

What if your saw kerf is greater than 1/8"? Like 9/64"? I have some friends who are machinists, and they actually agonize over such things. It's also why they hate carpentry.
