Would someone kindly advise me of the thermistor system and function.

Just general knowledge as it pertains to J-D tractors (I know what a thermistor is ;-)

Enquiring minds and all that..........

Thermistor did the trick! I did notice the old one not warming up, the new one gets warm for a few seconds like it supposed to.

As an alternative to replacing the thermister, a momentary pushbutton switch can be installed. This switch is wired in place of the thermister. Here's a thread where I documented how to do this, and what switch to get. It's about a 15-minute install. On my 4600 today, I have this pushbutton mounted directly below the key switch. When you start the engine, you press and hold the switch before turning the key on. Then you'll hear the solenoid go click and you can release the switch and crank the engine over. One additional benefit of this is that it acts as a security device since the pushbutton is rather inconspicuous and it will be impossible to start the tractor without knowing that the button needs to be pressed when you turn on the key. I've had this installed on my tractor now for a couple years and it works beautifully.
