Having just read bubenberg's post, he can give you the best and worst of both worlds opinion, as he has a Power Trac and quick hitch on a 3pt. I bow to his experience with both... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

(am i gonna need to make this a form letter? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )

OH - I would just add that the added cost for the Kohler I think is well worth it - after all that is the power plant and you need to be sure about it - although a little difficult starting in the cold - it started for me every time even down to around 0 degrees - need full choke to start - half for a while while warming up - quarter - then open -

and if you check out the comparisons - the difference is more than the 3hp would suggest (13% more) It produces 22 % more torque - and thats alot -

Bottom line - it is more powerful and I think a better engine

I think there was some question as to how Robin and Kohler measured torque differently in their specs. Does anyone remember that discussion and have anything to add?

MossRoad, The prices you quote are not bad, but they only apply to the 400 homeowner series. I was looking at the 2445 because I felt it is closest to the CUT of my dreams. Here are some of the prices I thought were high:

60" Brush Hog $1100
Post hole Digger $1200 (+ auger)
Snow Blower $3200
11 Cu Ft bucket $ 650
Pallet Forks $1200

Plus the PT just about precludes you from buying anything used. I have run across a number of bargains from people that have bought the wrong implement for their machine or bought one and didn't use it as much as expected. If I could afford it, I would love to have a setup like yours, but only along with a class III CUT. EX: If the fellow who hays my "back 14" quits and I only owned a 425 I would be limited to a 48" mower. Even with the 2445 the max size is 60". I wouldn't want to cut the 14 acres with either very frequently. With a typical Class III you can get an 84" 3-pt mower. If you go to the 1800 series to get the larger mower you loose the ability to install a backhoe. I guess that's what I meant by specialty machine. Thanks for helping me learn too!

Phil,

After driving my PT, it's seems that my Toro/Wheelhorse is slow and not very manuverable even though it has a 16" turning radius. I love the articulating steering, the full time 4 wheel drive, and the quick attach. Even with the bar tires, I do not dig up my lawn at all.

I bought a 3 point hitch grader blade and welded a quick attach plate to it. Works great, I can plow snow forward, and turn the blade around and back drag for leveling.

almost forget, Charlie has used my finish mowers to cut his one pasture, maybe he will chime in, although he has a much stronger PT model and almost choked out the Kunz finishmowers ... not observing the 1/3 rule ... private joke ... between farmers. never cut of more than 1/3 of an inch in one passage.

no, i mow with either my 48" or 60" pt mower at a higher setting and the rough cut mower another 57" of to the left or with the finish mowers 60", 57 inches and 57 inches ... 11.5 acres with some obstacles in 1.5 hours is not bad and it is my ex's place . so it has to look good

MR,
I think this discussion was going on about the time I bought mine. I vaguely remember looking into it, and I vaguely remeber finding that Robin and Kohler quote different SAE specs in their literature, but the measurement method for each of those specs was the same. I think. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
