I have a 1/2 mile long driveway and have some equipment to maintain it. The box blade I have was sized for a much smaller tractor (5') and the other is a homemade grader/gravel spreader that tends to remove the crown due to its size. One is too wide, one is too narrow and neither works great unless the driveway is the perfect moisture content. It takes many up/back passes at relatively slow speeds to try to get either to cut into the road. I had thought about upgrading my current box blade I have and getting one more suited to my MX5200, but the thing I need a heavy box blade for most is the driveway. The rest actually works fine with the one I have for smoothing out holes after digging stumps etc.

Do the land planes work on heavily compacted crusher run in a few passes? Did you get one with or without rippers? The increased weight alone on the cutting edge may be enough, but I want to still be able to tear out any potholes and smooth it out.

I would get the land plane with rippers. You can do it all with a box blade, but it sounds like your box blade is too small and light weight to do what you need. So either a new box blade that "can" do the job, or a new land plane that is tailor made to do exactly what you want to use it for.

Just for sure get one with rippers, it will help immensely with the pot holes.
