Pileated woodpecker.
You got that right (y) The largest woodpeaker in north America and about the size of a crow. Seen here is one visiting our feeder or a tree in our yard. They don't really migrate.

Ever notice how they use their stiff tail feather shafts as a third foot ? Not just unique to the Pileated but most woodpeckers .

You hear woodpeckers tap tap tapping.... then you hear a pileated woodpecker on a dead tree and you know it. So loud!

Pileated are the only woodpecker we have that goes at rotting stumps, on the ground.
They help me greatly to reduce the old stumps!
They are huge.
